She was born to the late Willie E. Field and Jennie Dean McManus Field on June 4, 1939, in Georgetown, MS. Mona graduated from Bay Springs High School in 1957. She married William Reuben Thornton on December 20, 1957.
After living in Montrose, MS, Mona and Reuben relocated to Pearl in 1964. She was an expert seamstress and worked in the alterations department of Maison Weiss for many years. She continued sewing and performing alterations for family and friends upon her decision to retire early to spend time with her grandchildren. She was an active member of Truitt Memorial Baptist Church in Pearl. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and was very proud of her children and grandchildren. She loved attending the grandchildren’s events and traveling. Always introducing herself as MawMaw Thornton, she never met a stranger and was always brightening up everyone’s day.
Mona is survived by her husband, Reuben Thornton of Pearl, and three children: Tony Thornton (Tammy) of McKinney, TX; Rene Runner (Mike) of Brandon; and Lisa Thompson (Bill) of Madison. She is also survived by eight grandchildren and one great grandchild: Brittany Evans (Blake) of McKinney, TX; Aaron Thornton (Dorane) of Midland, TX; Cody Beatus of Jackson; Matthew Runner, Madeline Runner and Abbey Runner of Brandon; Parker Thompson and Maris Thompson of Madison; and Bentley Rose Evans of McKinney, TX.
Visitation will be held from 5:00-8:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 5, 2015 at Baldwin-Lee Funeral Home in Pearl. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, May 6, 2015 at Truitt Memorial Baptist Church in Pearl with visitation beginning one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
