Johnnie Carroll Hill, known to most as John or J.C. Hill, went to Heaven to be with his Heavenly Father on Sunday, June 19, 2016. At the time of his death, he was a resident of Strong River Villa Assisted Living in Mendenhall, Mississippi. Prior to moving to Mendenhall on May 15, 2015, John and his wife, Edna, lived most of their lives in the metro area.
John was born in Jones County, Mississippi, on June 2, 1930. He graduated from Calhoun High School and attended Draughon’s Business College in Jackson. He worked for United Gas Pipe Line Company for 38 years, retiring on March 31, 1986, as area superintendent. He enjoyed a second career at St. Dominic Hospital, where he served 15 years, retiring a second time in 2011.
John was a committed Christian, and his daily walk exemplified the relationship he had with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. John was an active member of Flowood Baptist Church. Prior to his move to Brandon he was a member of Daniel Memorial Baptist Church. Most of his life, John was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday School and served many years as a deacon.
John married his childhood sweetheart, Edna Jane Sumrall, on June 5, 1948. He and “Mama”, as he affectionately called her, celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary on June 5, 2016.
In addition to his loving wife, John is survived by his two daughters, Linda Ward (David) and Janice Covert (Steve). He is also survived by his two grandchildren, Jonathan Shook (Susannah) and Faith Kennedy (Brian). Other survivors are great-grandchildren: Meredith, Anna, Wesley, and Audrey Shook; Dylan, Mason, Benjamin, and John Caden Kennedy.
Visitation is Tuesday, June 21, 2016, from 5:00 until 7:00p.m., at Baldwin-Lee Funeral Home in Pearl. The funeral services will be held at Flowood Baptist Church on Old Fannin Road on Wednesday, June 22, 2016, at 11:00a.m., with visitation at the church prior to the service at 10:00. Interment will follow at Lakewood South.
