Dr. John Hunt, born on March 4, 1939, in Wuhu, China, to missionary parents, passed away peacefully on June 18, 2024. His remarkable life journey, marked by a profound dedication to education, spanned continents and touched the lives of countless students and educators.
John’s early years were spent moving from China to England, Canada, and eventually to Beaumont, Texas, where he attended Lamar University on a track scholarship. He earned a Master's degree in Biology from Stephen F. Austin University and an Ed.D. from Baylor University, laying the academic foundation for a distinguished career.
Dr. Hunt began his 62-year career in education teaching in China, Texas, and went on to make a global impact by teaching in Liberia, Saudi Arabia, Germany, China, and Brazil. His teaching experience ranged from kindergarten to graduate-level students, demonstrating his versatility and commitment to education at all levels. In 1997, John was honored with the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. He also served as a teacher and science coordinator for the Department of Defense Dependent Schools (DoDDS) and as a respected professor at Mississippi College.
John’s passion for science was evident in his creation of Science Fun Days, through which he inspired thousands of children to love learning and discovery. His innovative teaching methods and infectious enthusiasm left a lasting impression on students and colleagues alike. He loved to say, "If you're not having fun teaching, your students are not having fun learning," a motto that encapsulated his joyful approach to education.
Beyond his professional achievements, John had a zest for life and a wide range of interests. He loved soccer and enjoyed texting with his daughter Beth about Manchester United. His daughter Monica's daily phone calls brought him great joy. He loved fishing with his grandsons, Kai, Kilian, and Louie. John cherished traveling, especially with his granddaughter Reagan, and had a particular fondness for Thai food. Gardening was another passion, and he took pride in picking roses and cucumbers for Catherine. He relished a “cuppa” black english tea with milk and honey, loved to read and appreciated a good Netflix show. He was also deeply devoted to his faith and cherished the sermons at Northminster Baptist Church.
John bravely battled prostate cancer for 16 years, facing the challenge with courage and grace. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Corn at MD Anderson and Dr. Henegan at UMMC for their dedicated care and support throughout his illness.
Dr. John Hunt is survived by his beloved and loving wife, Catherine Hunt; his children, Shawn Hunt, Greg Hunt, and devoted daughters, Monica Peco and Elizabeth Kohler; his nine grandchildren, who lovingly called him "Opa"; his four great-grandchildren; and his sisters, Monica Carter and Marg Eisner. He was preceded in death by his parents, Cyril and Jessie Hunt, and his brother, Don Hunt. His legacy of inspiring young minds and his contributions to global education will be remembered and cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to one of his favorite charities: MD Anderson, Water.org, or the Mississippi College STEM Program.
A funeral service for family will be held on Sunday, June 23, 2024, followed by an open house visitation from 2:45pm - 4:30pm at the Hunt home.
