She was born on January 17, 1938 to the late Ross Elbert Godwin and Mildred Vaughan Godwin in Selma, Alabama. Evelyn was a longtime member of Skyway Hills Church of Christ and faithfully always came until her health began to decline. A very loyal attendee, she never missed the lady's Sunday morning Bible study. Evelyn was dearly loved by her Church family and though she couldn't be present in person, was often present in spirit. Evelyn had a sweet disposition and worked as a certified nursing assistant at the Mississippi State Hospital and Jaquith Nursing Home. She also was a caregiver for her husband, John, until his death in 2016. In her free time, Evelyn was also a very talented baker and made many delicious treats.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by both of her siblings, James "Bo" Godwin and Maggie Johnson.
Evelyn is survived by her sister-in-law, Shirley Self; sister-in-law, Rose Godwin; nieces, Jan Francis, Elaine Cobern, and Debbie Godwin; nephews, James Godwin, Oscar Self, and Donald Johnson; and a number of other beloved extended family members and friends.
The family will receive friends from 1:00pm until 2:00pm on Sunday, November 19, 2023 at Baldwin-Lee Funeral Home in Pearl with a memorial service following that same day at 2:00pm. The family would like to let everyone know that they are also welcome to attend the interment of Miss Evelyn's ashes beside her husband at Lodebar United Methodist Church Cemetery in Pelahatchie after the memorial service.
