Artis was born in Magnolia, MS on January 12, 1913, to Lucy and James Simmons. She was one of seven kids, three brothers and three sisters. She was a devoted wife and a loving mother to her two children, grandmother to six grandchildren, and great-grandmother to nine great-grandchildren. She was dearly loved by us all and will be greatly missed.
Artis was an accomplished gardener and wonderful cook, but nothing matched the love she showed for her family and her skill to get them all together. She taught Sunday School for several years at West Jackson Baptist Church, molding the minds of many children. Her passion was the Atlanta Braves and the Ole Miss Rebels. She never missed a game, and her coaching skills from her arm chair were masterful. She never met a stranger and had an incredibly giving spirit. She was a true southern woman, the world will never be the same without her.
Artis is survived by her daughter Jo Ann Lea; sister, Juanita Heintz; grandchildren, Jeanene Ford, Randi Reid and husband Chris, Jason Culberson and wife Julie, and Carmen Presley; great-grandchildren, Corey Chambers, Christy Chambers, Colton Chambers, Evan Colyer, Brittney Presley, Nicholas Presley, Brendan Presley, Rylee Reid and Connor Culberson.
She is preceded in death by her husband William B. Buckley; brothers, Wilson Simmons, Archie Simmons and Edwin Simmons; sisters, Myrtis Mcallister and Edna Young; son James W. Buckley; grandchildren, Christy Ford and Pam Ford Colyer.
