

Velma Hood Harris, a resident of Christian City in Union City, GA died June 22, 2016 at the age of 105. She was born April 8, 1911 in Broxton, GA but lived most of her life in East Point where she graduated from Russell High School and was a member of First Baptist Church and Jefferson Avenue Baptist Church. Her 105th birthday was celebrated by dozens of family and friends.
She was married for more than 60 years to the late Charles W. Hood of East Point and they were parents of a son, Seaman3/C Marion Hood who died from polio during the Korean War. At the age of 90, she married the late Ray E. Harris of Union City whose lifelong business was Harris Super Markets.
Mrs. Harris was a career woman owning Hood Employment Service until her retirement. She was involved in many church and civic activities. At. First Baptist she was president of the Senior Adults, superintendent of the Young People's Sunday School Dept., Director of Training Union, choir member and Adult Sunday School Department Director. She was appointed to the Atlanta Training Union Association and taught study courses in Alabama, Georgia, and Mississippi.
She was a member of the East Point Historical Society, Gold Star Mothers, garden club, East Point Woman's Club, Druitt Speaker's Club and was named East Point Woman of the Year in 1985 by the American Legion. She won awards for her artistic abilities in crochet, counted cross stitch and china painting. She also enjoyed quilting, embroidery, and needlepoint and was a professional dressmaker and drapery maker.
Velma was the daughter of Gainer Corbitt and Hubert W. Little and had three siblings, now deceased, Earl Little, Edith Harris, and Ruth Draper. She is survived by her niece, Susan Draper Poole of Lavonia; nephew, William Little of Greenville, SC; step-son-in-law, James Gregory of Senoia; numerous great nieces and nephews; and close friends, the Emerson Searcy Family in Hendersonville, NC.
Graveside services will be at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 26 at College Park Cemetery with Dr. J. W. Wallis officiating. The family requests in lieu of flowers that memorials be made to Jefferson Avenue Baptist Church, 1150 Jefferson Ave., East Point, GA 30344 or to a charity of your choice.
