Ray Elliott was born, along with his twin sister Fay, on July 7, 1930 in Cartersville, Georgia. He was one of ten children born to Grady Elliott and Idelle Palmour. Ray grew up in Cartersville and was known for his adventurous spirit, quick wit and humor. After graduating High School, Ray began his career with the United States Postal Service. He was drafted into the Army in 1951 and served in Germany as a Finance Clerk. He received the Army Of Occupation (Germany) Medal and was honorably discharged in 1952. Upon returning to the States, Ray tried his hand at a number of occupations, Plumber, Salesman, Production Operator, and even a brief stint as a night student at Georgia Tech. Ray returned to the Postal Service to resume his career that would last until his retirement at the age of 62. He started as Letter Carrier and due to his strong work ethic was able to rise through the ranks as a Supervisor, Manager and eventually the Postmaster of Fairburn, Georgia. Ray also operated several small businesses during his life.
Ray met future wife Geraldine (Gerry) Smith while out with friends in Atlanta. They were married in 1961. They were married for forty years until Gerry passed away in 2001. Ray and Gerry’s first child, a son, Derek was born in 1963. Another son, Brian was born in 1965 and daughter Kim was born in 1968. His family knew him as caring man with traditional values but was a modern day dad when it came to his loving relationship with his kids and grandchildren. He enjoyed being involved in their lives. An avid golfer, Ray was known as a straight hitter and masterful putter who could sink a ball from anywhere on the green. He enjoyed spectator sports and UGA, Tech, the Falcons and Braves were his favorite teams. Fishing was another of Ray's favorite pastimes. He was known for telling entertaining stories, his generosity, his love of people and his warmth.
Ray is Survived by his son Derek and his wife Regina and their children Holly, Abbi, Tyler and Clete. Also, his son Brian and his children, Dylan and Spencer. And finally, his daughter Kim and her husband Thad and their children Ansley, Garrett, and Allie.
The family will have a visitation at Carmichael-Hemperley Funeral Home & Crematory, Peachtree City, GA on Sunday, February 26, 2017 at 2:00pm-4:00pm with US Army Military Honors at 3:00pm.
