Thank you for helping us celebrate the life of our beloved mother, Gloria Ann Wheeler Mitchell. She was born on August 25, 1926 to Vernon and Parthena Wheeler in St. Elmo, TN. Always popular in school, she found her way to David Lipscomb College in Nashville, TN. If you asked anyone who knew her what she was most known for, the answer was an immediate, “What a singing voice!” In fact, Gloria sang in every singing group she could. Choruses, quartets, trios, choirs…she sang. And it was her love of music that ultimately led her to another lifelong “‘til death do us part” kind of love.
Every good love story has a soundtrack. The love story of our parents, Carl and Gloria Mitchell supplied its own music from the beginning when they met as participants in an operetta on campus. Then, in her senior year, she had the honor of being named the very first Homecoming Queen in Lipscomb’s history. The match was struck, Carl proposed, and they married in August 1948. Their life’s “tour” took them to a few places including Chattanooga, TN before settling down in East Point, GA where they lived for many years raising their three children.
In their life together, they sang and performed at numerous weddings and funerals. In addition, they both were active in work and recreation. But it was their faith that was always most important in their lives, worshipping the majority of their time together with the East Point church of Christ where they both taught Bible classes and our father was an Elder. In 2007, our father, battling poor health, sang his last but our mother carried on. And now, on May 9, 2020 at age 93, our beloved mother has joined our father. I’m sure they are singing together even as you read this
.
They are survived by a host of children, grandchildren and great grandchildren including three children: Anna Childers and her husband Fitzie of Peachtree City, GA, Allyson Merrill and husband Eddie of Fayetteville, GA and Stan Mitchell and his wife Brenda, of Fairburn, GA. Grandchildren include Jerrod Satterfield and wife Amy, Joanna Satterfield Beasley and husband Charles, Joshua Satterfield and wife Lauren, Jessica Merrill, Jennifer Merrill Locke and husband Ryan, Paul Merrill, Marisa Mitchell Chambers and husband Richard, Kristin Mitchell Spence and husband Sutton and Dennis J. Mitchell.
Great grandchildren include: Josie, Jackson and Jeb Satterfield, James, Jack, Benjamin and William Satterfield, Hannah, Jacob Charles and Tate Beasley, Cora and Wren Locke, Isaiah and Isabella Chambers and James and Connor Spence. Momma Gloria/Grandma was preceded in death by her brother, Vernon Exum Wheeler (WW2) and great-grandson Jacob Michael Beasley.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday May 16, 2020 at the Fayetteville church of Christ at 870 Redwine Road in Fayetteville, GA. Mrs. Mitchell will lie in state beginning at 11:00 a.m. also serving as a time of reminiscing and catching up. The family requests that all attending follow proper social distancing standards. The funeral service will follow immediately at 12:00 noon. Mr. Terry Davis, “Momma Gloria and Daddy Carl’s” other child will be officiating the service.
The family has requested that remembrances be offered to either Raintree Village, Valdosta, GA (www.raintreevillage.org) or to Atlanta Bible Camp (www.campinagehi.org) in lieu of flowers.
We hope you can join in the celebration of our mother’s life.
Anna, Allyson and Stan
