Diane was born on May 25, 1946 in Scranton, PA to Russell and Esther Hughes. She moved to Lakewood, OH when she was 16 and during her senior year of high school, she met her future husband, Carl Miller, Jr. of Bay Village, OH. She graduated from Lakewood High School, Class of ’64.
After school, she began her work career as a telephone operator for Ohio Bell and she was quickly promoted to schedule clerk for her department. When her fiancé, Carl received his draft orders for the Vietnam War, they rescheduled their wedding date so they could be married before he left. Diane and Carl wed on September 30, 1967.
Diane and Carl welcomed two children, Wendy and Craig, and she stayed home to raise her family until returning to work in 1983 at the Lakewood Public Library. She later worked as a Law Librarian for McDonald-Hopkins and Tucker, Ellis & West. Diane loved to go to the beach and took many trips with her family to enjoy the sun and surf.
Diane retired in 2008, and later moved to Georgia to escape the Cleveland winters and to be close to her daughter. She made many new friends in her new town. She enjoyed playing games with friends, going to movies, dining out and taking day trips to explore her new southern surroundings. She was very active in the New Neighbors’ League Club of Peachtree City and the P.E.O. Chapter AZ Group.
Diane is preceded in death by her parents, Russell and Esther Hughes; and her husband, Carl Miller, Jr.
She is survived by her daughter, Wendy Hartman (Robert) of Peachtree City, GA; her son, Craig Miller (Amanda) of Olmsted Falls, OH; her sister, Marianne Scanlon of Norwalk, OH; as well as many other family members that she loved dearly. Diane leaves behind six grandchildren whom she adored: Owen, Kate, Benjamin, Allison, Andrew, and Stella.
A private interment will take place at Sunset Memorial Park in North Olmsted, OH. A Celebration of Life will be held at her son, Craig’s home, in Olmsted Falls, OH on December 17, 2023, 12:00pm-3:00pm.
While Diane was passionate about many causes, above all she valued higher education for women because she did not have the opportunity to attend college. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the college scholarships for women offered by the P.E.O. Sisterhood. Checks should be made payable to: “P.E.O. Chapter AZ” and mailed to P.E.O. Chapter AZ, P.O. Box 104, Sharpsburg, GA 30277.
