He entered elementary and high school in the Green County, schools school systems where he graduated in 1964.
He enlisted in the army in 1965, at Fort Jackson, SC, station. This is where he was stationed, after training, and he was assigned to Fort Devens, Massachusetts, until March 1966.
Robert qualified as a Morse code operator, graduating in March 1966. The first duty assignment included Okinawa, Japan.
Other duties assignments to Rock Branch, Petaluma, CA, and a tour in Pleiku, South Vietnam, in 1968. We traveled to Gordan, in Augusta, GA. He concluded his military service at Homestead Air Force Base, FL, in 1969.
Robert was employed by United Parcel Services, in 1969 for a tenure of 23 ½ years, as a tractor-trailer driver. Having driven over 1,000,000 miles, he acquired a 17-year safe driving award. In 1986, some of his civic organizations included serving as a member of the NAACP.
Robert developed a Christian belief at an early age, at Antioch Baptist Church of Greensboro, GA.
He would continue his journey in church to Mount Moriah Baptist Church, of Atlanta, GA. Finally, Arcadia Missionary Baptist Church is a church home in Griffin, GA. He was an ordained Deacon, serving in that capacity. He played the guitar, mainly with the Arcadia Praise team in later years.
There were seven siblings, growing up in Greensboro, GA. His siblings Calvin Douglas, deceased, James Nathaniel, deceased, Ruthie M. Ivory, Fannie K. Hutchinson, Helen Kelly, Willie Lemon, and extended families.
He married Vivian Harris, in 1974. One daughter was birthed, Essica Lenora, was born in 1976.
Robert loved traveling throughout many cities across the United States. He even traveled abroad, to Germany and Paris.
He established many friends, especially the Classmates of 1964, co-workers of United Parcel Services, and many Christian friends from the many churches throughout life.
A visitation and reception for Robert will be held Saturday, March 23, 2024 at 12:00 PM at Carmichael-Hemperley Funeral Home with a going home service scheduled to follow at 2:00 PM. A graveside with military honors will occur Monday, March 25, 2024 at 11:00 PM at Georgia National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Deacon Robert's memory may be made to Cancer Society or VA Southwest Network.
