Jeffrey Rothrock Hurl, 60, of Pataskala, Ohio passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, October 30, 2024, in Granville, Ohio. He was born January 9, 1964, in Marysville, Ohio to the late Rodney and Judith Rothrock Hurl. Jeff was a proud graduate of Culver Military Academy, where he played lacrosse and football and was a member of the diving team. He also attended Culver Woodcraft Camp and Naval Academy during the summers and would return after graduating to teach sailing. It was during these years that he also achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. He received his Bachelor’s degree from Bethany College, where he helped start and play for their lacrosse team. He was also a proud legacy alumni of Bethany’s Beta Theta Pi fraternity.
Jeff enjoyed spending time outdoors including hunting, fishing, and boating. Among his various nautical adventures, he spent a summer as a tugboat deckhand in Galveston, Texas and spent many summers on the water at Indian Lake. He was very knowledgeable in many different areas, and could use his creative thinking and ingenuity to solve any problem. His most recent hobby was N scale model railroads. He recently retired and enjoyed spending time tinkering and improving his home and 12-acre property.
Jeff is survived by his beloved wife of 34 years, Stephanie Savage Hurl; daughters, Taylor (Nathan) Rathbun and Payton (Steven Joy) Hurl; sisters, Megan Hurl Orr and Marcy (Mark) Niendam; furry sidekick, Winston; many nieces and nephews; and a host of other family, friends, and loved ones. In addition to his parents, Jeffrey was preceded in passing by his sister, Melissa Ellen Hurl, and his mother and father-in-law Stuart and Ernestine Thiessen Savage.
Visiting hours for friends will be held on Saturday, November 9, from 1-3 pm at Kauber-Fraley Funeral home, 289 S. Main St, Pataskala, Ohio, 43062, followed by a memorial service at 3 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Jeffrey’s name to his Indian Lake Memorial Fund. The fund will be used to honor Jeff's life and his favorite place with a bench and/or tree. Any remaining funds will be donated to the Indian Lake Chamber of Commerce.
