Daniel (Dan) Freeman Bowell, 80, of Pataskala, Ohio passed away at his home surrounded by family and loved ones on Friday, April 12, 2024. He was born December 31, 1943 in Dayton, Ohio to the late Dan and Rae Bowell. Dan graduated from Beavercreek High School. He went on to earn a Bachelors degree from Otterbein College and became an ROTC cadet. He served in the U.S. Air Force for four years. While serving Dan received his Masters degree from Missouri Central University. Upon completing active duty, he continued his service in the Reserves eventually retiring with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Dan was the first graduate of a new Real Estate program offered at Columbus State. He also enrolled in a number of art courses at the Columbus College of Art and Design as well as Columbus State Community College.
Dan was also an artist. He sold works thru a gallery in South Carolina as well as with Galerie D"Orsay. His love of all things art was known to close friends especially when it came to music. Whether if be rock, classical, pop or even heavy metal. He had an uncanny ability to pick winners before they were winners.
Upon completing his active duty, Dan took a position with the State of Ohio. Eventually he accepted a position with the Department of Defense (DoD), Defense Reutilization and Marketing Service (DRMS) located at the Defense Construction Supply Center Columbus. His team oversaw the handling, reutilization, and disposal of hazardous property.
It was during this time that he met his future wife, Cheri. Their relationship began as a wonderful friendship with them ultimately becoming best friends for life. They brought out the best in each other.
Due to the restructuring of DRMS Dan was offered a position with the Defense Logistics Agency, Training Center Columbus. His team provided environmental training on various aspects hazardous property.
In April of 2006 Dan retired from civilian service. He was then able to spend time doing the things he loved most; painting and traveling. He and his best friend Cheri, traveled thru all 50 states in the US and a number of countries and territories around the world. He also loved cruising. He spent his last birthday on a cruise in the Caribbean. Dan was a bit of a collector. The flags displayed in the family home attest to the many places he and his wife have enjoyed seeing.
Dan is survived by his loving wife, Cheri Bowell; brothers Michael (Patricia) Bowell and Thomas (Molly) Bowell, son Jeffrey (Darlene) Bowell; daughter Jennifer (Fontez Wilkerson) Hoskinson and step- daughter Michelle (Rich) Healy; grandchildren Caige, Caia, Allie, Lizzie, Will and Adrianna as well as nephews Danny (Valerie) Bowell, Ben (Amber) Bowell and Josh (Sarah) Bowell.
Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday, April 18, 2024 at KAUBER-FRALEY FUNERAL HOME, 289 S. Main St., Pataskala, OH 43062. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at Tri-Village Christian Church, 7509 E. Broad St. SW, Pataskala, OH 43062 with Pastor Paul Snoddy officiating. Interment will follow at Glen Rest Memorial Estate. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Disabled American Veterans Organization (DAV), P.O. Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250 in Daniel’s memory.
