Kenneth Morehouse was born Dec. 25, 1923 in Paso Robles and died Aug. 22, 2017. His parents were Ambert (Bert) and Florence May (Heaton) Morehouse, both of whom were from pioneer families. Kenny was the youngest of 9 children born on Christmas Day. He loved to joke that he was the best Christmas present his mother ever had.
Mr. Morehouse attended Oak Flat School and graduated from Paso Robles High School in 1942. He enlisted in the US Navy becoming a Pharmacist Mate assigned as a Navy Corpsman attached to the 4th Marine Division in the South Pacific in WWII. As a medic he was involved in campaigns on the Marshall Islands, Saipan, Tinian, and most notably Iwo Jima. During high school and after his return from the service, Ken worked as a meat cutter at Orcutt's Market in Paso Robles. In 1952 he, along with his partner Mel Gaylord, opened K & M Market on 30th and Spring Streets. Ken was well-known for his skill as a meat cutter and the quality meats he provided. K & M was sold in 1970 and he was employed as a meat cutter until 1983 when he and his wife Dottie headed to the Eastern Sierras to manage "Arcularius Ranch," a private fly fishing resort, near Mammoth Lakes. After 11 seasons at the "Ranch" they retired back to Paso Robles.
Kenneth is predeceased by his wife, Dottie (Arnett), his parents, Bert and May Morehouse, brothers, Larry, Elmer, Ray, and David, and sisters, Evelyn Cryer, Marian Sauret, and Doris Smith. He is survived by his brother, Jack of Merced; sister-in-law, Joyce Grimes of Antioch; his three children, Carolyn Belben, Tom Morehouse (Sheila), and Patty Fansler (Dennis); grandchildren, Jennifer (Adam), Justin (Becky), Tim (Karissa), Heather (Alfonso), and Ty; his precious great-grandchildren, Tate and Brielle; and many nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held on Friday, Sept. 1, at 10 am at Paso Robles District Cemetery followed by a Memorial Service and reception at First Baptist Church, 1645 Park St., Paso Robles. Arrangements under the direction of Kuehl-Nicolay Funeral Home, Paso Robles, CA.
