Her mother had been a school teacher and she taught Vivian a few things before she started 1st grade. At the end of the first six weeks of first grade, the teacher moved Vivian up to a second grade classroom. Vivian was able to graduate a twelve grade system in 10 years. Vivian completed her senior year at Louise High in 1943 at age 16. She was valedictorian from her elementary school and salutatorian from her high school.
Vivian was 16 when she began attending the First Christian Church in El Campo. After 3 months, Vivian accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Lord and Savior. She remained faithful to her Lord all her days.
Vivian met R C Coleman in 1944 and they were married on September 13, 1945. Seven children blessed this marriage. The youngest was two years old when Vivian was asked to teach preschool at Allendale Baptist Church in Houston. She taught 5 years at Allendale Baptist Church. In 1968 the family moved to Pasadena where they became members of Golden Acres Baptist Church. Once again Vivian was asked to teach preschoolers. She began in the nursery and worked around bed babies, one, two, three, four and five year olds. She spent 23 years teaching at Golden Acres and loved every minute of it.
When Mr. Coleman became ill, Vivian stopped teaching in the nursery so she could be by his side. He passed away on February 7, 2001.
Three years later, Habitat for Humanity came into Vivian’s life. They built her a house on the lot she and Mr. Coleman had purchased before his death. Just before the carpet was put down, Vivian wrote prayers and favorite bible verses of family and friends on the concrete all thru her new Habitat home.
Vivian became a member of the local home making and gardening clubs because of her love of the outdoors, gardening, flower beds as well as cooking. Well, she said not so much the cooking, although she did make an excellent banana pudding.
Vivian loved to sew for her children when they were school age. In later years, she made a quilt for each of her children and couch pillows or mini-quilts for each of their spouses. As macular degeneration began to hinder Vivian’s vision, she utilized help from her daughters to finish the last few items. All her children will cherish these acts of love forever.
Vivian was preceded in death by her parents: John Alex and Pearl Vivian Wolter, two brothers: John Alex Wolter Jr. and William Carl Wolter, four sisters: Anna Emily Hill, Laura Lucille Chromcak, Marion Marie Sykora Light, and Roberta Johnelle McDonald and two grandsons: Darrin Steve Coleman and Melvin Paul DuBois.
Survivors are her seven children and spouses: John Ronald Coleman (Carolyn), Robert Ray Coleman (Ann), Carl Wayne Coleman (Patsy), Patricia Carol Bradberry (Phil), Janice Sue Brent (Teddy), David Lee Coleman (Leah), and Barbara Ann Chitrit (Isaac) and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.
Ms. Vivian asked that we share this last statement by Linda French: When I die, I want to be like an old quilt; faded, well-washed, used up and well-loved. I think we can certainly say this applied to our Vivian Coleman.
