Stephen Alan “Pop” Vaughn passed away July 26, 2022 at the age of 85. He was a resident of La Porte, Tx. He was born in Berwick, Pennsylvania on November 3, 1936 to Hugh and Evelyn (Stettler) Vaughn. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers David Vaughn and Hugh Vaughn. He attended Berwick High School, joining the Marine Corps after graduating in 1954. After the Marine Corps he attended NC State for 2 years then went to work in his family bakery. He met and married Sophie Chewcaskie in 1960 and had two children, Colleen and Steven.
He moved his family to Houston in 1972 in big part to attend Berachah Church where he was a member. He joined the Pasadena Police Department in 1972 and was the oldest cadet to attend the Academy where he earned the nickname Pop. Sophie passed away in 1982 and he met and married Jennifer Pence on August 1, 1984 bringing son Derek to the family. He won medals in the Police Olympics and was named Officer of the year in 1974-1975. Pop and Jennifer bought a house and moved to La Porte in 1992. He retired as a Detective Sergeant from the Pasadena Police Department after 27 years in 1997. He was an avid runner, competing in at least 12 marathons. He also competed in numerous bridge tournaments. He loved gambling, golf, and fishing. He gave to many charitable organizations over the years.
He is survived by his wife Jennifer, daughter Colleen Barker, son Steven Vaughn and wife Rhonda, son Derek Vaughn and wife Kimberly, grandchildren Joshua Stough, Erika Irwin and husband Luke, Maizy Vaughn and Ava Vaughn and great granddaughter Eisley Irwin.
Stephen “Pop” Vaughn was deeply loved and will be greatly missed.
A gathering of friends and family for Stephen will be held Thursday, August 4, 2022 from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Following the gathering of friends and family will be a memorial service at 6:00 PM at Grand View Funeral Home, 8501 Spencer Highway, Pasadena, TX 77505.
