My beloved husband, how I miss you.  As I have read the words of family and friends, I realize that everyone knew Roy for what he was - so hardworking, so generous, with his time and equipment, to help others, so honest and proud.  And they also know how much he loved me. I would say he cherished me, adored me, loved me tenderly.  And I soaked it all in; it fulfilled me and made me whole.

In our 29 years together we had so much fun!  Starting with the wedding in Las Vegas at the Little White Chapel.  We stayed at the Flamingo in a gorgeous suite and got the limo for the ride to the chapel.  We had a romantic dinner with prime rib.  I had never had prime rib before so Roy was so happy that I liked it so much.  We also walked the whole strip but he got a taxi for the ride back to the hotel.  Such luxury I had never experienced before! I loved it all. Then the kids put on a reception for us.  Roy had picked up the cake which was quite large and the balloons.  He had Brandi and Roger with him.  He got stopped on the way home for speeding.  As a result he got tickets for that, an expired sticker and because the kids weren't wearing seat belts in the front of the pickup truck.  So life together started crazy! 

We went to Cozumel twice, each time for 7 nights.  Oh, what fun!  So beautiful!  We went to Puerto Rico and even spent a week at Moody Gardens.  Boy that was beautiful. We had a wonderful life.  

We were lucky to work together. When he was in the car port building era, I helped him and I worked hard, but man, he could outwork anyone.  He could figure out how to make something very difficult easier to do.  He just had that knack.

Roy also loved my kids - Misti, Brandi and Roger.  And they have been a true blessing staying with me and helping me in this trying time.  I love them so much, too.


Well, I know you aren't suffering anymore. I know you're in a better place.  I love you so much.  I miss you so much.  I find myself talking to you and you're not there.  I know time will help.  But right now everything is still new and I'll just have to keep hanging in there.

Grandpa Roy, as I called him was a very hard working and helpful man. Whenever someone in the family or a friend was in need of assistance and he could do anything about it he was there on the spot helping. Back when I was in scouts I had a big job to carry loads of mulch, so naturally since no one at my household thinks a truck would be useful we had to ask for help. At first all we did was ask Grandpa if he would let us borrow his truck and trailer, but being himself he decided that he would help us all the way through, driving, carrying mulch, and all in all letting us use the trailer. His simple good manner of helpfulness left a grave impact on my life.

Through my life I have always wanted to deceive people and make them think that something magical has just happened. My grandfather in particular was not fooled by my tricks. I wanted him to think I was really good at them. He would take the card and try to place it into the deck when I wanted to put it on top and cut the deck. This spoiled the magic.  My grandpa was like me and liked doing tricks. He would pull tricks on me and my brother. He liked the tricks I did, but always figured out how they were done. He was good at darts, ping pong and pool.  My grandfather had gotten sick and wouldn't go to the hospital. When he finally went, he learned that he had lung cancer. After he got out of the hospital he stayed a few more days at home. I went to his house a few of these days with my mom. I had a deck of cards and wanted to do one last magic trick. I finally walked over to him to show him a trick. I asked him to pick a card.  I took his card and shuffled it into the deck. He pointed out, You didn't shuffle that into the deck. I shuffled it again so that he knew it was shuffled well. I had him cut the cards and I put the bottom half on top but I marked where he cut to.  I went through what I did with him, I let you pick a card, and then I shuffled it into the deck. Correct? Correct. After that you cut the deck. Wouldn't it be cool if you cut exactly to your card? Well, yeah. That'd be pretty cool. I picked up the spot I marked and showed him the card he cut to.  I had him. He looked at the card. He looked at me astonished and said, Yep, that's it. How'd you do that? I wanted him to see a magic trick that seemed real before he passed. This moment meant a lot to me, and I wanted him to have a mystical feeling for once. I finally showed him magic after I had been trying to for years. I did it just in time.  I didn't have the guts to approach him until my mom told me I should. I am glad that I didn't waste the opportunity. Seeing the look on his face, for a moment it was like I teleported to the moon. It was a deep moment of satisfaction that left me ecstatic inside. I loved him and wished him well. I gave him something he could keep and he gave me something I could keep my whole life.  My grandpa meant a lot to me. He was a hard worker and was very wise. I will never forget him. I loved doing magic for him even if he figured me out. He was my grandfather that I loved and there is no way that I could forget what he did for my mom's family. He is forever memorialized through our pictures and stories. I at least have to tell this story to honor his memory. He deserves that.

Roy was my father-in-law for over 21 years. To me he was a role model for working hard and loving his wife. He worked as hard as any person I ever met. He always had side projects going on, such as building bird houses or making Christmas lights. He was always quick to help out neighbors or anyone else that asked. Roy loved Janie very much and he did all he could to give her a wonderful life. He was very passionate about certain topics, such as golf and politics. Roy and I spent a lot of time talking about stocks. Our very last conversation was about the stock market. Roy will be missed!

My grandpa Roy was a great man, and although I never truly got to see him working hard like all the stories say, I have my own fond memories of him, staying at his house with my cousins, and having to yell to get him to hear me because he was so hard of hearing. I'll cherish the time I had with him, and won't forget what he means to my family and I.

Roy Joiner came into our lives not long after we lost our real dad.  I only remember a few things about our real dad because I was so young when he passed.  But with Roy I remember when Misti and Kelly introduced me to him.  I walked up to him and kicked him in the shin.  Roy looked at me and told them give me a couple of weeks with him and I'll straighten him out.  Well it took 28 years for that to happen but it's not his fault.  
There was one time on my birthday I remember that he told me my room and closet better be clean.  I didn't like to clean my room up but I knew if I didn't I would be grounded on my birthday.  So I did and when I came home from school Roy and mom were there. They told me happy birthday but Roy said I was grounded, I asked why and he said that I did not clean my closet.  Now I knew I had cleaned it but I also knew I didn't clean it good.  He said come and I will show you.  When I went to open the door there was a brand new mongoose bike.  I had been wanting that bike for so long.  That is just one of the many things that he did for me.
He saved my mom, my sisters and my life.  He made my mom so happy.  He took good care of her.  He took in a whole family and left his life behind.  That's a hard thing to do.  Going from having your own house by yourself to four people you are taking care of, that's not easy.  I can't explain it, he was so strong, like nothing could knock him down and if it did he would get back up. 
Roy gave me many things and lessons on how to become a hardworking, proper man, Roy was one of the hardest working man I know.  He never stopped.  From working on carports, cars, to building buildings.  You name it, he's built it.  
Roy used to make me get up early and work with him.  It didn't matter what he was doing I had to get up and help and I hated it because I liked to sleep all day.  But now, I'm so glad that he made me get up those days and help him. Roy did teach me how to be a hardworking man, I just never applied it until the last 2 years.  
I've always wanted to please Roy but I just couldn't figure out how to do it.  We all know I have been a troublemaker and that I have been away for a while. But Roy always helped me and I don't know why because I didn't respect him.  I used to hate him and didn't want him around.  I loved him on the inside but there was just a lot of hate also.  We've just always butted heads. 
But I have finally grown up and we became friends.  I'd go over to Mom's and Roy's house to help with something or pick something up and we'd get to talking and before I knew if I was late for dinner.  I'd say I got to go and we would get back to talking and before I knew it another 20-30 minutes would go by again.  I'd never had this kind of relationship with him.  He would let me borrow his tools, his truck, anything else that I needed. And that was a first.  It was so different; I can't even explain it.  We were friends.  He was finally approving of me and I really believe I was making him proud. All I've ever wanted to do was make him proud.  I've seeked that approval just never got it, until recently and now he is gone and I just became friends with my dad. I've always wanted to show him that he raised me right and taught me how to be a man, he's taught me that anybody can be a father but it takes a real man to be a dad.
I kinda think that he knew he was sick but wasn't going to say anything about it until he knew it was time for him too.  I believe that he was waiting on me to get out and come home and be the man he raised me to be and know that I was able to help and take care of mom.  In the last few weeks, he was telling me what was what and what keys went to what and what was going on with the house. Stuff he didn't tell anybody about.  He even gave me a house key and let me keep it, even after I moved out.   I have so many memories of him.  Stuff he has done for me and made for me.  The list goes on and on.  
So when I knew that mom was going to set him free I decided that I was going to hold his hand and be there for him with every flap of his wings as he was ascending up to the Lord.  I held his hand from the time he was taken off life support until the very last breath that he took.  I didn't leave his side or let go of his hand.  Nobody could have made me move or go anywhere.  I was going to stand by his side like he has done for me my whole life.  
I just want you to know Roy that you are my dad and I'm really going to miss you and I'm going to do my best to take care of mom for you. I know that he is up above where he belongs.

I can count true friends on the fingers of one hand.  I counted Roy and I still count Janie on that hand.  When we moved in across the street, Roy was the first to come shake my hand and welcome me to the neighborhood.  
I first found out what kind of guy he was when I was out by the driveway digging a ditch by shovel to put in a drainage pipe.  Roy came over and said "whatcha doin neighbor?" I wiped the sweat out of my eyes and said I was raising blisters with this Mexican drag line!  Without even blinking he said, " Take a break and let me go get my helpers Ku and Bota".  Not sure what he was talking about but not wanting to be rude, I went and got another beer while Roy walked off to his back yard.  In a minute here he came back with Ku and Bota which turned out to be a good looking Kubota tractor with ALL the accessories.  Roy had that ditch dug in about 10 minutes and we drank another beer together and started getting aquatinted

I will forever be grateful to Roy for saving us, because I truly feel like that's what he did. He took in a family that had been devastated by a sudden death. He loved us and treated us as his own. He taught me so much  about building stuff and fixing stuff, about being a good person. He always supported me, through all my softball teams, all my school activities and while I was in the Navy. He was always there if I needed him. For anything.  He helped me build a cover for my back deck. He helped us deliver mulch when Casey was in scouts. All we had to do was ask, and he was there. He loved me as a daughter, and I loved him as my dad. I will forever miss and love him!

Roy was one of the hardest working men we've ever met. He made sure that our sister, Janie Joiner, was cared for in any way he could. Roy used his tractor to help his neighbors on many occasions. After Hurricane Ike, with their home a total loss, Roy went all over the neighborhood to help his neighbors. Roy was a very caring man, and he will be missed greatly.

I have known Roy about 57 years. I met Roy in 1959. He was a Senior at Sulphur High School in Sulphur, La. I was a Sophomore. I didn't know him real well, just saw him in the hall from time to time. He drove a nice yellow 57 Ford Fairlane to school. Back then, we all noticed cool cars. And he used to squeal the tires all the time leaving school with those loud mufflers making all kind of noise! So, he stood out a bit. He graduated that year and joined the Navy. Meanwhile, I continued on through school in classes with his sister DeLane Joiner for the next couple of years. I worked as a delivery boy at a local drug store my Senior year and had met his MomMammy and his Dad, Pappy through my work at that store . I didn't see Roy again till Jan. 1963. We had both migrated to Houston and by a twist of fate, I found him again. About 6 months later I became his brother-in-law. We both got married on the same day, June 19, 1963. We had a double wedding when his sister DeLane accepted my marriage proposal. On the wedding day, Roy had 2 flats on his new 63 Ford.courtesy of his co-workers at Houston Lighting and Power Company. I had my car, so I had to double back and pick him up. We got to the church and he had left the marriage license in the glove box of the car getting the tires fixed.  We had to hurry back and get the license.  When we pulled out from the church real fast to go get the license, the girls thought we had jilted them! We were almost late for the wedding.

 We spent a lot of time together off and on over the past  52 years. I have a lot of stories I could tell, I picked out a few more to tell you. To old to remember all of them.

We both worked with his Dad, Pappy putting on roofing and siding on weekends. Many people don't knowbut Roy could run really fast! One Saturday we were working on a house repairing an outside wall. We pulled a board off the outside wall and a 1,000 bees came out of that wall. He passed me up running for the truck. He was fast! 

Roy eventually quit HL&P and went fulltime working with his Dad. Putting on roofing and siding. Later we both became welders. Worked many jobs together welding and pipefitting. He showed his speed to me once again. We were welding a pipe inside a chemical plant and a line beside us blew out carrying steamonce again he passed me up as we were getting out of dodge. 

Very hard working man. He didn't care if it was 200' feet in the air or under the ground.  And he could build anything. Out of wood or out of metal. A real craftsman. Roy's last 15 or so years of work was spent at Shell Oil in Deer Park as a welder and Unit Operator.
We lived close together in Pasadena, and the family spent a lot of time together with his Mom and Dad.
He was always around to help out. I built a large building one time, he was there to help. We built his Mom and Dad a house, he was  there to help out. 

In 1986, his decision to help someone out changed many lives. My son's girlfriend Misti, ( who is now my precious daughter-in-law)..and her Mom  with another sister and brother, needed help to move. I asked Roy if I could borrow his trailer to move them. He volunteered to help us move them. That's when Roy and Janie met. He met her just helping out. Later they got married. He then begin to help Janie raise Brandi, Misti and Roger. I think it worked out well for all of them. Just a hard working man trying to take care of the family. 


In 2008 a Hurricane wiped out their home. A complete replacement home was built. His goal was to oversee the building of a beautiful home for Janie. He succeeded. He was proud of that accomplishment. He wanted that for Janie. 

The last few years saw some medical problems for him and Janie. He did his best to take care of her. Last week he told me. If it's my time to go; I am ready, but I just worry about Janie. Love is like that. You worry about the one's you leave behind. We are here for you Janie. We can't replace Roy; but your friends and family are right here to help you all we can. 

Roy was the last to go in the family. His Mom.Dadtwo sisters and a brother are all gone to Heaven ahead of him. Been a tough 9 months on all us with the loss of his sister DeLane(my wife)our good friend Alan King and now Roy. We have to carry on. We have to pray to God to give us the strength, and we have to hold together as a family and help each other. 

I ask you Lord, please help this family get through the pain and carry onRest in peace Brother-In-law.Amen

I met Roy in 1986 when I was 16 years old.   We had just lost my dad and needed to move out of our house.  I had a new boyfriend that happened to have an Uncle Roy that had a trailer to help us move.  Uncle Roy was introduced to my mother Janie when he not only loaned his trailer, he also offered to help my family move.  He was there just to help his brother in law, Kelley Jones, but apparently he felt something for my mom.  The next thing we knew, Roy and Mom were dating.   See, Mom came as a package deal.  She had 3 kids, 16 and younger.   Then Roy decided that he must have loved Janie enough that he wanted that full package deal.  They married and he moved us all together in 1987.  Roy not only saved our family, but he raised us as his own.  He was there through our graduations, marriages, birth of our children, birthdays, holidays, happy times, sad times and always willing to do whatever was needed for any of us.  He was a hard working man, always building and fixing things.  He was a loving, caring and dedicated husband and stepdad and will be forever loved.  I called him Roy, but he was truly my Dad!  I will miss you so very much!  Misti Jones
