Bob graduated from Aldine High School in Aldine, Texas in 1949. He served for his country in Germany from 1951 - 1953 with the United States Army in the Artillery Division. His career included over 10 years with Southland Corporation and later was self employed with Stuart Pest Control for 18 years before retiring in 1993.
Bob served as President Elect of the Kiwanis Club of Pasadena from 1998 -1999. He received the Tablet of Honor from the Kiwanis International Foundation for his dedicated service to the community, Kiwanis and the world. The Tablet of Honor is the highest honor that can be bestowed by the Kiwanis International Foundation. He also served as president of St. Pius Sunshiners for 18 years where the membership grew from under 100 members to over 400. He loved to arrange the entertainment for the Sunshiners monthly meetings that included a variety of country western bands. Bob was also a member of the Classic Club of the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce. He loved to travel and took many trips with his wife after retirement.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; his son, Robert (Bobby) Mattern, Jr. of Houston; his daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Mike Odom of Port Aransas; grandchildren, Chris Mattern of Houston; Rynne Mattern and wife Ashley of Alvin; Heather and Mitchell Odom of Port Aransas and numerous loving family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Darla Jean, his parents and his twelve siblings, including his sister Agnes Strickland who was very involved in caring for him during the early years of his childhood.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, March 8, 2014 from11:30a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Grand View Funeral Home with services to follow at 12:30 p.m. in the Chapel. Interment will be held at Woodlawn Garden of Memories in Houston, Texas.
