Marvin was born in Houston, TX on October 29, 1944 to Henry C. Smith and Pearl Eason Smith. He grew up in Denver Harbor (Podunk) and played baseball, mostly at pitcher and first base.
Marvin, know as Buster to his childhood friends, graduated from Austin High School in 1963. He joined the Navy on the same day as his two best friends, Dwight Linn and Walter Lemley. After discharge from the Navy, he worked at International Papers. Marvin also worked at Lubrizol Corporation for 31 years and retired in 2000.
While retired, Marvin worked with kindergarteners at Carpenter Elementary where he read with them every day. He also worked part-time as security during professional and college sporting events. He met many famous people in this position, even Paula Deen. Marvin was an avid Astros fan always watching the games from his favorite chair.
Marvin is survived by his wife of 38 years, Jo McCall Smith; daughter, Lara Merritt and husband, Matthew; grandchildren Olivia, Reilie and RJ Merritt; step-daughter Keri Havens Bourque and husband Brian; grandchildren Dr. Meagan Carter and husband, Kyle, Lauren Bourque and fiancé, George Grieve, and Brady Bourque; step-son Captain John Havens and wife, Catherine; sisters Tommie Johnson and husband, Robert, Patricia Wheatley and Dolores Landers; Aunt Annette Horlica, Uncle Ronnie Guess; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Marvin is preceded in death by his parents Henry C. Smith and Pearl Eason Coyle; and daughter Carey Ann Smith.
Marvin was a very Godly man and long-term member of First Baptist Church in Deer Park.
A visitation for Marvin will be held Friday, July 14, 2023 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at First Baptist Deer Park, 438 E 8th St, Deer Park, TX 77536, with a Celebration of Marvin's life beginning at 11:00AM.
