Margaret Jean Shepherd Turner, 81, passed away December 3, 2011 in Kingwood, TX. Jean was born October 8, 1930, in Weleetka, Oklahoma, to Jeff and Mary Shepherd. Jean was a dedicated English teacher and administrator at San Jacinto Elementary and Deer Park Jr. High School in Deer Park ISD for 30 years. She retired from Deer Park ISD in 1987.
Jean graduated from New London High School in 1949 where she was an active member of the marching band and many other campus organizations. She attended Baylor University but left to marry her high school sweetheart, Robert (Bob) Turner, July 27, 1951. After Bob’s discharge from the Navy, Bob and Jean moved to Deer Park, TX where they raised their three sons. After the birth of her third son, Jean completed her Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and accepted a position as a 6th grade teacher at San Jacinto Elementary in Deer Park. She later transferred to Deer Park Jr. High where she taught English for many years before becoming the Assistant Principal. After retirement, she and Bob enjoyed traveling around the country in their motor home and spending time with family. A devout Christian, Jean was a long time member of the First Baptist Church Deer Park. At FBC she was a committed member of the choir where she served as its president as well as a founding member of the ensemble Adoration.
Jean is survived by her sons, Jeff and his wife, Libby, of Coppell, TX; Gary and his wife, Donna, of Coldspring, TX; Marcus and his wife, Amy, of Huffman, TX; grandchildren: Casey Helmick(Gary), Haley Turner, Jessica Gonzales(Sam), Tyler Turner(Bethany), Martin Turner, and Dane Turner; great grandchildren, Graham Gonzales and Baby Helmick due in May.
Family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, December 6, 2011 at Grand View Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, December 7, 2011 at 10 a.m. at Deer Park First Baptist Church 438 East 8th St. Deer Park, TX 77536. A graveside service will follow at 4 p.m. at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Henderson, TX on Wednesday, December 7, 2011. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Deer Park Education Foundation, 203 Ivy Avenue Deer Park, TX 77536.
