LaVerne D. Holcomb, 94, of Pasadena, TX, passed away January 10, 2023. LaVerne Darll Gilbert Holcomb was born on a farm in Guernsey, Ark on April 4, 1928 to G.W. and Ideal Gilbert. Though born & raised on a farm, LaVerne was a city girl at heart. After high school graduation, she moved to Texarkana, Tx., where she went to work managing the lunch counter at Newberry's, a variety store. Through friends, she met Harold Holcomb. They were married on July 3, 1948, and moved to Pasadena, Tx., where Harold was employed at Shell Refinery.
In October 1949, LaVerne & Harold welcomed their daughter Linda, shortly after purchasing their first home. Even as a homemaker, LaVerne was a strong supporter of women's rights & liberal politics. She was a Girl Scout leader for many years and Linda's friends always enjoyed Mrs. Holcomb as leader.
In the mid 1960s, LaVerne went to work for Interstate Brands, Dolly Madison Cakes. After working in their thrift store for a few years, LaVerne was one of the first 3 women allowed to be promoted into supervisory/management positions for Interstate Brands. In the early 1970s this was quite an accomplishment. She eventually rose to the position of Regional Manager for all the thrift stores in the Houston Area before her retirement.
LaVerne was close to all her family members, but especially her younger sister, Arlene. She was a loving aunt to nieces and nephews on both sides of the family. LaVerne had a wide circle of friends. She always made friends with her neighbors, coworkers, and members of the many social clubs she belonged to, including Red Hats, EE, and LIFT, and even those she met in her travels.
LaVerne was an accomplished painter and enjoyed decorating and crafting. LaVerne was independent, determined and active until shortly before her death.
LaVerne is preceded in death by her husband, Harold Holcomb, and her parents, G.W. and Ideal Gilbert.
LaVerne is survived by her daughter Linda Holcomb Sykes and husband John; sister Arlene Caler; nieces and nephews, Rhonda Boehm, and husband Robert; Gary Caler; Ann Andress; Brenda Anderson and husband Kevin; and eight grand nieces and nephews and their families.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to the American Lung Association.
