John was born in El Reno, Oklahoma on March 22, 1947 to Taylor (Scoop) and Margaret Moorman. John lived in multiple locations around the country before graduating from high school in La Porte, Texas. John graduated from the University of North Texas in 1971 with a degree in psychology. In 1969, John married Marilyn Elaine Storey, a speech pathologist, and they moved to Minnesota. Because of the risk that Marilyn may have inherited the Huntington’s gene from her mother, John and Marilyn adopted their daughter Katherine Park Moorman (Katy) from Korea in 1977.
While in Minnesota, John had a diverse career in psychology and mental health. John worked for various mental health centers, co-founded the Therapeutic Community Residence in Lindstrom, established a private practice in counseling with offices in Lindstrom and Cambridge, and taught at nearby colleges and in correctional facilities.
In 2000, John retired from his work in Minnesota and moved to Kerrville, Texas. John was active in local politics and the Unitarian – Universalist Fellowship of Kerrville. After many years of illness and gentle care and love by John, Marilyn passed away in 2009 from Huntington’s disease.
In Texas, John found love with his wife Daisy Franklin. After moving to Round Rock, Texas, John became an active member of the Society of Friends where he adopted the spiritual principles of Simplicity, Peace, Integrity, Community, Equality, and Stewardship.
John loved to read, fish, tinker with mechanical systems, talk politics, travel, and just enjoy life with friends. He was active in the Democratic Party, and passionate about multiple social issues. Throughout his life, John listened, communicated, and connected with people and constantly strove for a more supportive world
John was predeceased by his wife Marilyn (Storey) Moorman and his parents Taylor and Margaret Moorman.
John is survived by his wife Daisy Franklin-Moorman, his daughter Katherine Park Moorman Lamers, his stepson Jason Franklin, his grandchildren Cela and Django Lamers, his sister Jeannine VanDyke, niece, nephew, aunts, uncle and many other cousins and relatives and his friends Bill Olsen, Jim Myers and Robert Lucio.
