John had a brilliant mind and even brighter smile. He was known as a generous soul who would do anything for anyone. He was a man that would give the shirt off his back to help someone in need, even if he was in need himself. John was happiest when outside whether it be climbing the tallest trees, fishing, hog hunting, or spending time at the beach. He also enjoyed spending time with those he loved. John’s proudest accomplishment was his amazing son, Zachary.
After a long battle with addiction, John is finally at peace and will be deeply missed by so many who love him. A very close friend of John’s said it beautifully, “He certainly had a weakness, and usually these folks--the mentally ill and addicted--can't hide it from society, so it becomes a great and tragic shame for them. But, know that he was a wonderful friend and kind spirit.” John loved with all his heart.
John is survived by his children Zachary Duncan and Brooke Manuel; his parents Lovette and Joel Bales; his father Sam Duncan; his siblings Taylor Bales, Brandi Aiken, Derek Duncan, and Nita Bales; his uncles and aunts Charlie and Kerri Cook, Hubert and Holly Harrell, Jimmy Duncan, and various others, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial service to celebrate John’s life will be held at Grand View Funeral Home at 8501 Spencer Highway in Pasadena, TX on Monday, June 20th. Visitation with family and friends will begin at 1:00, with the service at 2:00.
