He was born on November 18, 1929 in Wortham, Texas to Joe Wesley and Maggie May Padgett.
He was the seventh of eight children. His family moved to Pasadena in 1935 where James attended public schools and graduated from Pasadena High School in 1950.
He met and married Ina Christine (Chris) Montgomery in 1952. He proudly served his country as a member of the U.S Army and was honorably discharged at the end of the Korean War. He then gained employment at Hill Petroleum as a Stationary Engineer for 40 years. Following retirement in 1991, he and Chris traveled extensively in the United States and Canada.
James was an avid sports fan and enjoyed rooting for the Houston professional football, baseball, and basketball teams. He was also a fan of the University of Texas Longhorns and he a Chris attended many football games. Since the early 1960’s, James and Chris have been members of Golden Acres Baptist Church. James was ordained as a deacon in 1965 and Chris served as the church organist. They taught Sunday school together for over 40 years. James was also a member of the Masonic Lodge.
He is survived by Chris, his wife of 64 years; their children and spouses, Becky and David Smith, Jim and Lounette Padgett, Charley and Sondra Padgett, Mary and Kenney Moore; five grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. He also has one surviving sister, Mildred Lorene (Rene) Nelson, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Sheila Danielle Padgett and one great granddaughter, Kaitlyn Sophia Munoz.
