Dorothy Marie Stanfield, 96, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 3rd, 2022. She was born on February 1st, 1926, in Houston, Texas, to Thomas Edgar and Dorothy Mae (Gartman) Williams. In the early 1930s, her family moved to Pasadena, Texas. Known for having fun, she was a proud member of the Pasadena High School Class of 1943. She met the love of her life, George Stanfield, when he chauffeured a date she was on with someone else. They dated all through high school and World War II. After high school, she took a job at IBM until George returned from the war. They married on March 10th, 1946.
Married life was full of adventure, weekends at the river, and road trips to visit family and see as much of America as they could. After George retired in 1978, their 72-acre weekend getaway in Buffalo became their permanent home, adding new activities such as herding cattle, bailing hay, and horseback riding. Marie took up hobbies such as cross-stitch, landscape painting, and collecting toothpick holders.
In the early 1990s, they built a new home back in Pasadena where they celebrated 50 years of marriage before George passed away in November 1996. Marie stayed busy volunteering with the American Legion Auxiliary and organizing monthly luncheons and yearly reunions for the Pasadena High School Class of 1943 until she turned 90. Marie was independent, adventurous, and constantly on the go. She went hot air ballooning and even donned a wetsuit for white water rafting. She loved to travel and took many road trips and cruises, including Hawaii, New England, Lake Tahoe, the Bahamas, and an Alaska cruise with the entire family to see where George had been stationed during WWII. Her time was filled with cards and dominoes on Wednesday, bowling on Thursday, and a standing hair appointment on Friday. She loved Rummikub games, taking care of her plants, watching sports and game shows, and visiting with everyone.
She lived on her own until she moved to Parsons House Assisted Living in LaPorte at age 95, where she enjoyed decorating her room for every occasion. She was still up for adventure, asking her granddaughter against all advice to take her to the Kemah Boardwalk to try zip lining for Mother’s Day.
Marie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, George Stanfield; parents, Thomas Edgar and Dorothy Mae Williams; sister, Irene and brother-in-law O.G. Bright; and grandson, Jason Lee Stanfield. She is survived by her loving children, Ellen and husband George Lance, and Ed and wife Cindy Stanfield; grandchildren, April Lance and Ryan Stanfield: granddaughter-in-law, Kristin Stanfield; adoring great-grandchildren, Aeryn Lance and fiance Thomas Meek, Riley Lance Maguire, Derek and Madison Stanfield; cousin, Donnie Redman; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and treasured friends.
