Born October 16, 1928 in Houston, TX to Paul Jessie and Ona Jones, he graduated from Milby High in 1947, where he played Football for the Milby Buffaloes. He served in the United States Naval Reserve and was a Retired Operator from Shell Chemical Plant, Deer Park, Texas. He married his High School sweetheart Etta B. Jones in 1947, they were married 64 years.
Derwent enjoyed playing fast pitch and slow pitch softball for Shell, dominoes, hunting, fishing, square dancing, dirt bike riding and even learning to fly an airplane long enough to solo a flight. One of his greatest joys was his children, coaching his son’s Little League and Softball with his daughter.
Derwent spent many hours and years repairing washers, dryers and lawnmowers, generously helping family and neighbors with this skill.
Derwent is preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Etta B. Jones; his parents, Paul and Ona Jones; sister, Helen June Reber; brother, Joe Thomas Jones. Survivors include son, Mike (Katherine) Jones of Spicewood, TX; daughter Pat (Bill) Baker of Pasadena; sister Jan (Carl) Sims of Houston, TX; brother Jimmy (Betty) Jones of Lovelady, TX; Sister-in- Law Eunice Jones of Shoreacres, TX; grandchildren, Micah (Michael) Semmelmann of Round Rock, TX; Missy Baker of Pasadena, TX; Brooke (Troy) King of Pasadena, TX; Clint (Wanda) Baker of Baytown, TX and Cody (April) Baker of Houston, TX; great-grandchildren Malea and Mason Semmelmann; Roy, Cordie, and Mallory Baker.
Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, March 24th, at Grand View Funeral Home Chapel.
