CATHERINE ELIZABETH DOVE HANEY was born November 8, 1942 in Mobile, Alabama. Her parents were John Wright Dove and Myrtle Glaeser Dove, both born and raised in the historic King William area of San Antonio. Catherine loved growing up in San Antonio, and she graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1960. She earned a B.A. in English from the University of Texas at Austin in 1964, and a M.A. in History from the University of Houston in 1993. She enjoyed a 38-year teaching career in the Pasadena Independent School District: at South Houston Intermediate School, Miller Intermediate School, and then 34 years at J. Frank Dobie High School. She coached the Dobie Academic Decathlon Team for 9 years, culminating in the team’s first National Championship in 1992 which resulted in a visit with President George H. W. Bush at the White House. She organized the Trailmixers, a group of former Dobie employees who meet for lunch monthly to enjoy the special bond formed by their association at this fine high school.
Catherine is survived by her beloved husband, Roy Elmo Haney, and is proudest of their two wonderful children: Roy Michael Haney and wife Jayna of Pearland, Texas, with their children Ryan Michael Haney, Erin Patricia Broderick Haney, Jessica Claire Oakley, and Sarah Holland Oakley; and Leigh Ann Haney Choate and husband Dayne Stirling Choate of Cedar Park, Texas, with their children Catherine Dove Choate and Dave Trevino. She is predeceased by precious infant grandson, Dash William Choate. The family wishes to thank her longtime caregiver, Rosa Nunez.
