He is survived by his wife Lois Townsend, his daughter Kelly Townsend (Don Freeman), Eryn Freeman (Justin Wolfe), Jessica Freeman (Oscar Bonilla Jr), Eli Freeman ( Danielle Golob), his son Jeffrey Leonard Townsend (Rena Sine), Jordon Townsend (Madeline Matheson), Bradley Townsend (Alix McCubbin), Meredith Townsend and great grandchildren Brynlee, Ellis, Olive and Willa.
Len's father served in WW II for the duration while young Len did his part with drugstore and paper deliveries.
Upon Len Sr's return, they moved to a small farm on the outskirts of Winnipeg.
Len was recognized as a young teen for his natural talent for drawing and was hired by the Winnipeg Patent Office.
He trained Land Surveyor and was employed by the Canadian National Railway. He spent several years surveying across northern Canada.
During trips home to Winnipeg he met Lois Gemmill. Theirs was an instant attraction that grew into 62 years of loving marriage and partnership.
Promotions to Edmonton, Kamloops and Vancouver resulted in Len becoming CNR Western Regional Freight Sales Manager. His railway career brought many adventures before retirement to Qualicum Beach, BC over 30 years ago.
During his lifetime Len was a dedicated community volunteer. His service included YMCA, Rotary, and curling and golf club activities with each move. He was ever-involved in activities from his role as Santa Claus to his time as director of the Canadian Transportation Association, all while being an active, involved father through the school years of his children.
Upon moving to Qualicum Len enjoyed family, stamp club, morning coffee groups and had more time for his artistic gift. His lifelong interests included the arts, history and world events. He was known for his storytelling, sense of humour and love of good conversation.
He volunteered for the Kwalikum High School Honours Society, served as a Director of the Coastal Community Credit Union and was also on the board of the Parksville Qualicum Community Foundation.
The family is grateful for the compassionate, professional care and support from Oceanside Health Services, as was Len. We are also grateful for the sensitivity and care of Jill Major at Yates Memorial Services.
Len was celebrated privately by family with the green burial that he had planned.
If inclined, a donation to the ALS Society of BC in Len’s name would be welcome.
Len’s belief and faith in human goodness is his legacy. He always left a smile in his wake, reminding us that the glass is ever half full!
