He graduated from the University of Saskatchewan as a mechanical engineer and served in WWII. He married his sweetheart Nora McEwen in 1946 and they headed for Pine Falls, Man. Don went on to manage Abitibi paper mills in Pine Falls, Iroquois Falls, Ont., and Grand Falls, Nfld., while Nora put her home economics degree to work raising their eight children: Pat, David, Margaret, Audrey, Clark, Jean, Alex and Gail. He and Nora loved to take their clan, and the family dog, on skiing, sailing and camping expeditions. Don also served on the National Research Council of Canada and Manitoba health boards.
In 1983, they retired to a hobby farm in Salmon Arm, B.C., where Don kept bees, volunteered with community groups and raised money for the Canadian Cancer Society. Don, predeceased by Nora in 2011, leaves his brother Bill, of Palm Desert, Ca., his children, their spouses and more than 20 grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who have benefitted greatly from Don’s kindness, wisdom and generosity.
Special thanks to the compassionate staff at Eagle Park Health Care Facility. A family gathering is being planned. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Englishman River Estuary restoration through The Nature Trust of BC.
