She was born October 13, 1945 in Parkersburg, the daughter of the late Joseph Ellsworth Boice and Glenda Louise Boice McGivern. Her father died 5 months after she was born while he was serving in the US Navy during WWII. In 1950, her mother married William McGivern, and they reared Susie along with her four siblings.
Susie graduated from Parkersburg Catholic High School in 1963. She attended Marshall University and graduated from Mountain State College. She retired from Nelson’s Drug Store, and had previously been employed by the Public Debt, Reichart Furniture Store, and the Too Small Shop. Susie enjoyed working and making friends with her co-workers. She was also very creative at home making floral arrangements, jewelry, and able to beautify any old piece to look special. She kept a lovely home and enjoyed decorating for the various seasons. Her favorite was Christmas. Susie was also an avid visitor to local thrift stores and garage sales. Nothing pleased her more than a great find to share with her family and friends. Most of all, she loved being a wife to Butch and a mother to her son Michael. Susie and Butch particularly enjoyed their yearly beach vacations to Nags Head, NC., and she also found great joy in attending Michael’s many sporting events over the years.
Those left behind to cherish her memory include her son Michael Andrew (Heidi) Winans; two sisters, Mary E. McGivern (William Jones) of Houston, TX, and Carole A. Sabatelli (Mark) of Raleigh, NC; two brothers, Patrick D. McGivern (Donna) of Hilton Head Island, SC, and James M. McGivern (Ann) of Hagerstown, MD; one aunt, Mary Jane Wyatt of Parkersburg; step-grandchildren, David Burns, Emily (Michael) Crabtree, step-great-grandchildren, Sophia Ward, Gavin Burns, Claire Crabtree; and many cherished cousins, nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Charles R. (Butch) Winans; and step-granddaughter, Lindsey Ward.
The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the staff of Milestone Senior Living for their compassionate care.
