Dwight was born February 18, 1944, in Parkersburg, the youngest child of the late Okey Woodrow Sturm and Ruth Geraldine (Smith-Jones) Sturm. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn (Parnell) Sturm, and two daughters, Christina and Kathryn. He is also survived by numerous nephews and nieces.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Patricia (Sturm) Michaels and Judith (Sturm) Adams, and his brother, Dr. Philip Sturm.
Dwight was baptized at the Grand Central Ave. Church of Christ in 1956. He served several years as a deacon for the Camden Avenue Church of Christ. At the time of his death, he was a member of the Belpre Church of Christ.
Sturm graduated from Parkersburg High School in 1962 where he was a member of the A Capella Choir and the West Virginia All-State High School Chorus. In addition to performing in two Barbershop quartets, he was a member of The Joyful Sound gospel music quartet, and two community choruses: the Ohio Valley University Choral Union and the Parkersburg Choral Society.
He retired from the DuPont company in 2001 as a laboratorian after 32 years of service. He served the Washington Bottom Volunteer Fire Department as an emergency medical technician for three years. Upon retirement, he returned to college at Ohio Valley University and graduated Magna Cum Laude in 2005 with a Bachelor of Arts degree.
Dwight diligently researched his family history. He was a member of several historical and genealogical societies, the Wood County Historical and Preservation Society and the Capt. James Neal Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution. Dwight and his brother, Philip, self-published a family genealogy.
Visitation will be on Monday, April 22, at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Jack Thorn will officiate at the service beginning at 1:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to either the Christian Relief Fund, or to Love and Care Assisted Living in Parkersburg.
