Robert Lee Powers, age 85, passed away on January 20, 2018 at the Angel Bright Hospice Care Center in Corpus Christi, Texas. Born on September 8, 1932, in Lamar County, TX, he was the son of the late Otis and Cornice Powers. Robert married Yvonne Adams of Glory, TX, on January 7, 1955. She was his wife and best friend until her passing on December 4, 2014.
He is survived by a sister, Juanita Bowman of Paris, TX, and a brother, Jackie Dee Powers, of Greenville, TX. Robert is also survived by his two children, Robert Dee Powers of Houston, TX, and daughter Peggy Yvonne Day of Corpus Christi, TX. Robert also has three granddaughters, Rachel Van Buren of Corpus Christi, TX, Emily Frances Powers of Austin, TX, and Chloe Victoria Powers of Houston, TX.
Robert spent most of his career in military and public service. Robert was a veteran, having served during the Korean and Viet Nam wars. Robert joined the U.S. Navy at the age of 17, and after three years, joined the U. S. Coast Guard. He retired from the Coast Guard after a distinguished 28 years of service. Serving his country in several locations: New Orleans, LA, Honolulu, HI, Corpus Christi, TX, Guam, Traverse City, MI, and Sacramento, CA. He also spent 20 years in civil service working for the U.S. Air Force in Sacramento, CA, eventually retiring to Paris, TX in 1999, where he and his wife Yvonne remained until 2015.
Robert was a loving father, devoted husband and loyal friend. His love for his family and sense of humor were just two of his many admirable qualities. He also had a great passion for travel, taking Yvonne on many wonderful vacations.
A Memorial service, with Military Honors has been scheduled for 2:00 pm, Saturday, March 17, 2018, at Bright-Holland Funeral Home, with Reverend Ken Cannon officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to service time.
