Herbert William Page was born August 3, 1923 in Southend-on-Sea England to Beatrice Garnet and Charlie {aka Barber} Page. He attended Kings College England and earned a degree in History and finally many years later, having moved to the US, a PHD in business and marketing.
He trained as a pilot for the RAF in WW2, where he met his eventual wife Joan, also in the RAF working as a wireless operator. In fact, Bert and Joan, along with other RAF members, were guests of the queen in 2001.
Having been teased by the wonders of Canada where he was sent for flight school, the family moved there from England in 1957 bringing two sons; Ian Page of Unionville, Ontario, Peter Page of Sutton, Ontario and a daughter Angela Page of Swan Lake NY with them. Bert and Joan had two more daughters Donna Page Edwards, Hackettstown NJ, and Linda Page Yankaskas, Millington NJ, while living in Canada.
Before moving to the USA in 1972 he became Ontario’s regional commissioner for scouting, where he developed the Venturers program for older scouts. Mr. Page sat with the duke of Edinborough presenting when the Duke arrived to present awards to scouting leaders.
In his corporate life he worked for many corporations including Borden, Miles Laboratories, Warner Lambert, American Chickle, Life Savors, Squibb and Proctor and Gamble. He was also an adjunct professor in the business school, teaching to executives at Syracuse University for many years. In his final work years he began his own consulting firm with the motto “Expect the Best, then make it happen.”
Since 1993 he and Joan have lived in Heron’s Glen, a community he was honored to change to a self owned entity after becoming head of their HOA and knocking door to door There he started the Veterans of the Glen which is still active today.
His 10 grandchildren are Tracy, & Jenny Page, Malcolm, Morgan, Miranda Hardy, Kevin, Sean Lynch, Christine Edwards, Nicholas & Natasha Yankaskas, and two great-grandchildren Faith and Teaghan Hardie who all quote their pampa as constantly saying “family is everything”
He loved blackcurrent jam, the cryptic daily British crossword, jeopardy, airflight, scouting, and stingers. He was the quintessential English gentleman whose worst and only swear word was “phoey”. Throughout his life he would say, “go to bed grateful and wake up thankful”.
He was flown up with his wife May 18, 2018 via a cesna airplane ambulance where he was looking out the window at Morristown airport where he used to keep a cesna there himself.
He died naturally at his daughter Donna’s and wife’s new home in Hackettstown NJ peacefully after a full and loving life May 19, 2018.
