NOVEMBER 12, 1941 – JUNE 3, 2020
Joyce Kay Huebner, 78, died peacefully in her sleep on the morning of June 3, 2020 surrounded by her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Joyce was born on November 12, 1941 in Los Angeles, California. At the age of two, she moved to Gresham, Nebraska and lived there until she left for college at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. She majored in Elementary Education. While at the University, she met her husband, Gene and they were married on June 1, 1963. Joyce taught kindergarten and first grade while her husband finished dental school. They were blessed with their daughter, Melanie, who was born in 1964. Joyce moved with her husband to Fort Worth, Texas, Holloman Air Force Base, New Mexico, Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, Macon, Georgia, and finally to Omaha in 1977. Their son Jeff was born in New Mexico in 1966, and son David was born in Rochester, Minnesota in 1969. Joyce stayed at home with the children until the youngest left for college. She was a Girl Scout leader, Cub Scout den mother, soccer mom, baton mom, hockey mom, Sunday School teacher, and was in charge of several Christmas pageants at her church. She also found time to obtain her private pilot’s license. Joyce went back to school at the University of Nebraska at Omaha and earned her Master’s degree in counseling. She spend the next 22 years at Immanuel Mental Health Center in Omaha working as a psychotherapist. Joyce was renowned throughout the city and state for her work with adults abused as children. She was selected as the Nebraska Mental Health Counselor of the year for her work. Joyce was a member of the Red Cross Disaster Relief Team and participated in 13 national disasters as a mental health counselor, including being at 911 ground zero and the Pentagon. Joyce would go two weeks at time, using her vacation time and that donated from her colleagues to work with the Red Cross. Joyce retired in 2003, the same day as her husband, and they began their goal of traveling. They travelled for 10 years for about six months out of each year in their motor home and enjoyed visiting all over the United States and Canada. Travel was generally for shorter periods because Grandma Joyce would not miss first birthdays, Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas, baptisms, graduations, or any other significant events involving her twelve grandchildren. She loved her family dearly and enjoyed being with them whenever she could. In 2015, Joyce and Gene moved to the Grand Lodge retirement facility in Papillion. Joyce enjoyed her new friends there, as well as bible study and Grand Lodge church. She enjoyed ceramics, crafting, happy hour, and sitting by the fireplace.
Joyce is survived by husband Gene, children Melanie (David Lempke), Jeff (Brandi), and David (Jennifer), grandchildren Jenna Lempke, Joli Huebner Hollowell (Ben), Danielle Huebner, Nick Lempke, Chris Huebner, Ashley Huebner Mohlman (Dakota), Cole Lempke, Jonathan Huebner, Michael Huebner, Abigail Osterholt, Jacen Osterholt, Ty Huebner, and great granddaughter, Ava Hollowell. Due to concerns with Covid-19, a small service will be held on Saturday, June 6th at 1:00 pm at Kahler Mortuary in Papillion for immediate family members only. There will be a celebration of Life at the Grand Lodge when conditions permit. In lieu of flowers, the family would request donations to the Association for Frontotemporal Dementia (the aftd.org).
