David Edwin Malde of Sioux Falls died at the University of Nebraska Medical Center of congestive heart failure on January 14, 2024.
He was born in Mitchell, SD on June 3, 1952, to Edwin and Mary Ellen (Wilson) Malde. He attended Mitchell High School, graduating in 1970 and went on to graduate from Dakota Wesleyan University in 1974 with a degree in Psychology. It was here that he met the love of his life, Janna Fritzemeier. They were married on July 23, 1971.
Dave was known for his love of baseball and pitching career around the state of South Dakota. He played from his early years into an amateur career setting pitching records in the state. He pitched so hard he once broke a catcher’s hand!
He worked in the car industry in his early career years, selling them and owning a car care/repair business. In 1998, David received his Masters degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from South Dakota State University. This led to his beloved career counseling boys at McCrossan’s Boys Ranch in Sioux Falls, SD. He counseled there right up until his passing. He was recognized in 2018 for 25 years of service volunteering for the Howard Wood Relays in Sioux Falls, SD.
His five children, fourteen grandchildren and two great-grandsons were his pride and joy. He treasured his time spent with them, sharing his love of sports, hunting, and music. He also loved his hunting dogs and almost always had a Labrador. His wife and his family truly meant the world to him.
He was a member of Hilltop United Methodist Church and played his electric guitar in the Praise Band. As his health issues became more challenging, it was one of the hobbies that he was still able to do.
Dave embodied gentleness and patience. His loving support was felt by all who knew and loved him. He carried an amicable, grounded presence in which one could feel secure, open and seen. He counseled many who were struggling against life’s worst abuses and abandonments, and shame, without judgement and with the insight and wisdom to help. He was a precious gift to this world and one that will never be forgotten. He will be missed every day.
He is survived by his wife Janna and their five children and their families: daughter Melissa (Derrick) Krogman and daughter Arin (Ben) Bullinger and son Dylan (Tessa) Krogman and son Kaysen; daughter Elizabeth Rygg and daughter Shanna (Ryan) Koch and son Oliver, son Kyle Rygg and fiancée Madeline Nelson, and daughter JoElle Rygg; daughter Carolyn (Chad) Larson and son Cole, daughter Carlye, and son Carter; daughter Lori (Dave) Bosanko and daughter Torrence and son Lincoln; son Mark (Deanna) Malde and sons Liam and Finnick and step-daughters Gabriella and Samantha Molina; his sisters Carol Hasz and Lynette Ellefson; brother-in-law Bruce Fritzemeier; his brother-in-law Jed (Nancy) Fritzemeier; brother-in-law Todd (Katie) Fritzemeier; sister-in-law Beth (David) Freed; and many nieces and nephews.
