William Gail Mattern, 83, of West Chester, passed away on Sunday, July 21, 2024, at Chester County Hospital due to complications from Pulmonary Fibrosis. Born on May 2, 1941, in Tarentum, PA, he was the son of the late Loyd and Ruth George Mattern Sr.
Bill proudly served in the U.S. Air Force as a Loadmaster on the C-130, notably flying Bob Hope during the USO tour to entertain troops in the Vietnam War. After his honorable service, he embarked on a career as a master plumber, establishing Mattern's Plumbing and Heating in New Kensington, where he successfully ran the business until 1979.
Following the dissolution of his plumbing business, Bill relocated to West Chester and began a 16-year career in the railroad industry. He worked with esteemed organizations such as Westinghouse, Kawasaki, and SEPTA. At the age of 55, Bill retired from SEPTA and launched a handyman business in West Chester, providing dedicated service to many residents of Hershey's Mill and West Goshen Township.
Bill enjoyed spending his winter months as a "SnowBird" in Yuma, AZ, with the love of his life, Sandy. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Sandra L. Mattern; his children, Tamara Lynn Harmon of Cheswick, PA, Todd Mattern of Yuma, AZ, and Susan G. Mattern of West Chester, PA; his 4 grandchildren, Nathan Conforti, Noah and Lilly Cuccurullo and Kayla Mattern Evans, plus 2 great grandchildren, Stella Quinterro and Elle Evans and in addition are his sisters, Judy Grottenthaler and Dorothy Hazlett. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Loyd Z. Mattern, George "Fred" Mattern, and David Mattern.
Family, Friends and Neighbors of Knollwood Neighborhood are welcomed to join his family in a "Celebration of Life" at their home at 1203 Clearbrook Road, West Chester, on September 29, 2024, at 3 PM. Bill will be buried at Philadelphia Memorial Park at a later date (TBD) with Military Honors by the US Air Force.
Bill's dedication, hard work, and service to his community will be fondly remembered by all who knew him. His contributions to both his country and his local community leave a lasting legacy.
