A lover of art, literature, history, and music—and an inveterate prowler of book and record stores—Phil was known for his intellectual curiosity and dry sense of humor. Lesser known talents included poetry, doodling, and inventing phenomenal storybook voices. Phil was quietly generous to all and fiercely proud of his family.
Born in Jersey City, New Jersey, on June 17, 1947, he graduated from Malvern Prep and Villanova University. A champion of the transformative power of quality education, Phil served as CEO of the Goddard Schools from 1997-2009. Building Goddard, alongside brother-in-law Anthony Martino and brother Joseph, into a 350-school organization serving 40,000 children defined his professional life.
Phil is survived by daughters Bett [Ray Rennard] and Julie Burwell [Brett], beloved grandchildren Stella, Henry, and Loie, siblings Karen Martino, Joseph Schumacher and Nancy Fisher, and a large extended family. Phil was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Mary (Torpey).
Visitation from 11 am to 1 pm on Saturday, August 12, 2017 at Alleva Funeral Home, 1724 Lancaster Ave, Paoli. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Operation Smile (operationsmile.org).
