courageous battle with cancer and IPF.
Margaret (83) was born in Pressburg, Slovakia in 1938 as the third child of Josef and Elizabeth Weiss Szandtner. Surviving Margaret are her husband of 62 years, Stephen Jochum; three children: Tony Jochum (Susan Linvill Jochum, spouse), Lisa Jochum, and Michael Jochum (Elisabeth Redman Jochum, spouse); three grandchildren: Sarah, Kerrie, and Seth; and her sister, Isabella Szandtner Koller.
Margaret’s father was a successful tailor, with a shop in Austria and another in Slovakia. She was born in Pressburg, Slovakia (present day Bratislava), but spent her early years in the small town of Klosterneuburg just north of Vienna. Her parents lost everything during World War II and moved to America in June of 1950, eventually settling in Philadelphia near family. Margaret married Stephen Jochum in 1959. In order to provide the best possible education for their children, they moved to Wayne, Pennsylvania in 1971 where they built their own house.
Margaret was a dedicated mother to her children and a committed caregiver to her parents later in life. She had her own typing service for some time, and also worked with her husband in his own private consulting engineering practice. She was a translator for German families who came to Philadelphia’s Institute for the Achievement of Human Potential, and enjoyed being a tour guide for German visitors to the city. Margaret loved her family and poured herself into hosting family gatherings and picnics. She enjoyed working in her garden, attending concerts and plays, and taking trips to the shore with family and friends.
The family respects Margaret’s wishes to be remembered fondly without a funeral or ceremony and appreciates privacy at this time.
