With heavy hearts we share the loss of our Mother, Joyce Meckling Eldridge, who passed peacefully on December 3rd, 2020 at the age of 87. Joyce was beloved by her three children, eight grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren, and was an integral part of a rich and colorful life mosaic that extended well beyond her immediate family. Her easy and welcoming manner, combined with a warm, caring heart and deceptively sly humor enriched the many friends, neighbors, co-workers, and even casual acquaintances whose lives she touched.
Joyce was born in Philadelphia on June 21, 1933, and graduated from Lower Merion High School. She married William Lawrence Eldridge in 1953, and after giving birth to three children and living in Maine for 10 years, she returned to the Main Line area in 1968, where she spent the remainder of her life residing at different times in Narberth, Penn Valley, Wayne, and Malvern.
After working at the William H. Vaughan Company insurance firm in Narberth, she served as an administrative aid for the Lower Merion School District for many years before retiring in 1998. She also did volunteer work for Surrey Senior Services for nearly a decade.
Among Joyce’s passions were knitting, sewing, and cross stitching, and her skill and creativity yielded many cherished Christmas stockings, blankets, and holiday embroidery for her entire family.
Joyce enjoyed many years at her second home at the Jersey Shore and later gathered additional seaside memories during her travels to Alaska, Hawaii, California, North Carolina and Oregon.
Joyce is survived by her three children, William Lawrence Eldridge Jr, Janice Lynne Yost, and Scott Richard Eldridge; grandchildren Jeffrey, Rebecca, Gregory, Amanda, Sara, Marissa, Robbie, and Kelsey; and great grandchildren Leyla, Jaxon, Talon, Cannon, Anson, Darren, and Evelyn.
To celebrate her life, we have set up a Memorial Grove in Joyce's name through an organization called Trees for a Change. The trees will be planted in a National Forest that was destroyed by wildfire. Joyce's trees will help restore the beauty of the forest and will be a living tribute to her for years to come. Our family will get a framed certificate with the number of trees and a card with all messages after all the contributions have come in. We invite friends, family and members of the community to contribute trees to this special grove by visiting this link:
