Dr. Otto Roza 87, passed away on Tuesday, October 30, 2012 two days prior to his 88th birthday, in Florida. He was the first nephrologist (kidney specialist) in Washington County and the tri-state area. He introduced outpatient dialysis for patients with advanced kidney disease and established inpatient dialysis at Washington County Hospital. He was the medical director of the Meadow Dialysis Facility in Hagerstown. He also served as the chief of medicine and medical staff at Washington County Hospital. His son, Dr. Eli Roza, joined him in nephrology practice, and they worked together for 25 years. Dr. Otto Roza cared for his patients until he was 80 years old. Dr. Otto Roza was born in Czechoslovakia. During World War II, he was captured and taken to Nazi concentration camps. He miraculously survived the Holocaust. After the war, he met his wife, Klara, also a Holocaust survivor. Dr. Roza received his medical education and training in Israel. He moved to the United States with his family1966 to specialize in the treatment of kidney disease. Dr. Roza is survived by his wife of 65 years, Klara; his son, Eli; his daughter-in-law, Susan; and his grandchildren, Caroline, Katie, David and Daniel. A Memorial Service will be held in Hagerstown.
