Gary Selik Olman, died peacefully in West Palm Beach, Florida on Thursday, December 6,2018 at the age of 88 years. Gary is survived by his Wife Judith (Judy) Handelson Olman, of West Palm Beach. His daughter Karen Olman Ketcham and her husband Frank, of Otisville, NY. His sons Larry Olman and wife Kathy of Lynbrook, NY, and Mark Olman and wife Christine of Queens, NY. Grand Children Jason, Kyle, and Sarah, Daniel and Melissa, Raven, Mark, and Al and Great Grandson Oliver. He is preceded in death by his brother Donald of Long Island NY and Sister Loretta of South Carolina. Gary was born on September 16, 1930 in Larchmont, NY to Maxwell and Lillian Olman. He graduated from Kings Point Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, NY with the class of 52’ with a degree in Marine Engineering, serving during the Korean War, traveling the World while supporting our military forces. He married Judith Handelson, the love of his life on April 12, 1953. Following an Honorable Discharge from the Merchant Marines, Gary began working in Sales and then continued as the successful entrepreneur of several businesses, where he worked side by side with his wife until their retirement. Gary loved the outdoors. He was avid hiker and climber. Climbing the Grand Tetons of Northwest Wyoming, and many of the Adirondack Mountains in NY. He was an active member of the AMC and NY/NJ Trail Conference, serving as a trail maintainer for portions of the Appalachian Trail, and Shawangunk Ridge Trail within their NY portions. Gary was a Sailor. He and Judy had several different sailboats based out of the City Island Yacht Club, from where they explored Long Island Sound, NY Harbor, and the East Coast. Enjoying and sharing their love of the water with family and friends. He loved watching his children and grandchildren grow and blossom into the successful adults they are today.
Funeral Services will be held at 1:15pm Tuesday, December 11, 2018 at the South Florida National Cemetery, 6051 S State Rd 7, Lake Worth with a reception to follow at the Palm Garden Health and Recreation Center, in West Palm Beach. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Gary’s life.
