Sunset August 1st 2020
Joyce Powell was born in Clarendon Jamaica West Indies of West Indian parents Charles Mills and Myra Mills she was the seventh of eight siblings Sharly, Cherry, Edna, Cordella, Tit, Hyacinth, and Noel, who is the only boy and the only one here today. Joyce started her education in a church school and loved to sing as a young child. She was brought up in the church with strict parenting. After graduating from high school, she worked for the postal service for many years. She then decided to migrate to the U.S.A. to join her brother in Brooklyn, New York. She met and married Vincent Powell, her late husband and inherited two step daughters Ingrid and Gwendolyn. They later, moved to Florida where Joyce worked as a nursing assistant and was an active member of her church. She sang in the choir with joy in her heart. She liked to play crossword puzzles, chew ice, and watch wrestling on TV. There was a mutual love between her and her grandchildren Michelle, Michael, Anthony, Peter, and one great grandchild Reggie. Her husband became ill and so she retired to be at home with him and eventually, he passed away. Her church family and her own family and friends supported her and she was still singing on the choir and very active in the church. She, also, became very ill and her brother worried about her being at home alone so far away, encouraged her to move closer to family in Lake Worth, Florida. Her health seemed to have improved but, just when she seemed to be enjoying her new home, shopping for household stuff and furniture, she became very ill hospitalized three times and in rehab twice. Now she is in God’s care. She will be missed by her brother Noel and his family, nieces, nephews, grandchildren, cousins and her church family. Joyce, this is the house you lived in. We just wanted to see your beautiful face one more time before you go back to singing with the angels. Rest In Peace
