Born in Orlando, Florida, he was the son of Hugh Lemuel Banks and Gertrude French Banks. He graduated from Boone High school class of 1956. He attended Orlando Jr. College before enlisting into the Air Force in January of 1957. In 1970 Don flew 900 hours over the Ho Chi Minh Trail, Vietnam where he earned the Distinguished Flying Cross and received multiple commendations and medals. He retired as a Major in 1978 after serving 22 years as an Electronics Warfare Officer on B-52’s. Don went on to continue his education at Brevard Community College and the University of Central Florida. He then worked for Harris Corporation as a Technical Writer for over ten years before retiring.
Don was a member of Eau Gallie Church of Christ in Melbourne, Florida, where he had previously served as a Deacon and song leader. He enjoyed, fishing, playing chess and dominoes, oil painting, working on model railroads, coin collecting, and all things FSU sports. Don loved, trains, planes and fast cars. Don enjoyed traveling to the Islands with his wife and friends. Don will be remembered for his love for God, country and family.
He is survived by his wife, Cherry Heard Banks, children Kelly and (Vickie) Banks and (Todd) and Michelle Fancher. Brother Lawrence and (Debi) Banks, grandchildren, Charlene Ealy, Vanessa Reed, Christopher Graham, Ashlyn Bopf, Austin Fancher and Allyson Fancher. With many other great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by younger brother Gerald Banks and his parents Hugh and Gertrude Banks.
A visitation for Donald will be held Thursday, August 26, 2021 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Fountainhead Funeral Home, 7359 Babcock Street SE, Palm Bay, FL 32909, followed by a Celebration of Life Service at 12:00 PM. Entombment will be at Fountainhead Memorial Park.
