

Bernard William McGowan, 92, of Vero Beach died Sunday (7/21) at his home. “Bernie” was born on December 31, 1920 in Boston, MA to Thomas and Catherine McGowan. Bernie was a longtime resident of both Boston and Southborough, MA and had been a “snowbird,” between Southborough and Vero Beach for many years before he and Dorothy, his devoted wife of 67 years, made Vero their year-round home. Bernie had enlisted in the U.S. Army in early 1942 during WWII and served in both the Pacific and European theaters. Following his war service, Bernie continued for an additional 32 years in the U.S. Army Reserve, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1977. In 1980, he retired from the New England Telephone Company after 34 years of service. Following his retirement from the phone company, Bernie and Dot began enjoying their retired years together traveling between Southborough and Florida. Their favorite activities included playing golf and enjoying family and friends.
In addition to his wife, Bernie is survived by his children: Judith, Leo, Linda, Bernie Jr. and Edward, grandchildren: Kelly Viera and Patrick McGowan and great-granddaughter: Claire Viera.
Bernie was predeceased by his parents and brothers: Leo, Frank, Gerry, Albert, Charles, Paul, George, and Timothy.
A memorial mass will be held Thursday at 5:00 PM at St. John’s of the Cross in Vero Beach, FL.
