Mrs. Britton was bright, classy, and always polite. She was a woman who exemplified the elegance of years gone by. Born October 22, 1941, she grew up in St. Paul, MN. After attending the University of Minnesota, she felt drawn to the energy and fast pace of cities. In New York, she met her future husband while she was working as a writer on “The David Suskind Show.” Donald Britton, a Broadway actor, was a guest on the show.
They were married nearly 58 years, until Donald died in 2022. Donald and Susan found joy in the simple act of being together. They shared a wicked dry sense of humor, a trait they passed on to their two children.
Mrs. Britton was also a part of the corporate world. She worked in community affairs at CNA Insurance where she launched a program to help inner city children in Chicago become interested in math by holding competitions, which she named MathCounts. It is now a national competition.
When the Brittons moved to the Monterey Peninsula in 1984, she jumped into the world of the Monterey Symphony, becoming a board member. Frequently she hosted guest musicians from out of town at her home. Later she also became a champion of First Night Monterey, serving on its board. She was also involved in every capacity at All Saints’ Church in Carmel.
At their best when they combined forces, the Brittons owned Britton Designs in Carmel Valley village. She had the creativity and vision needed to design homes and he had the gift of bringing those designs to life.
A fabulous classical pianist in her younger days, Mrs. Britton had a few talents that were as unique as she was. She could write upside down and backwards in cursive. And, no matter the attire, she never walked past a good climbing tree without climbing it.
Mrs. Britton is missed by her family and many friends. She is survived by her two children, Eve Marchant Britton of Glastonbury, CT, and Christopher Robison Britton and his wife Krista, and their two children, Kendall, 18, and Grady, 14, of McLean, VA; her sister, Mollie Hedges of Carmel; her best friend, Jackie Lynch of Carmel Valley, and numerous nieces and nephews.
The excellence of the in-home hospice care, provided by the VNA, combined with wonderful caregivers made a huge difference in her quality of life.
A memorial service, featuring some of Susan’s favorite pieces will be held June 15, 2024, at All Saints’ Church, Ninth & Dolores, Carmel.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation be made to The Central Coast VNA & Hospice, 5 Lower Ragsdale Road, Monterey, CA 93942 or All Saints’ Church.
