Mary Freitas Tavares

March 20, 1935 ~ August 5, 2014

Pacific Grove ~ Mary F. Tavares, a native of Santa Cruz, Flores, The Azores, passed in Monterey following a long illness. She worked at Hudson Lumber Company in San Leandro before moving to Pacific Grove fifty-one years ago. She then worked at Holman’s Department Store and the Carmel Unified School District.

Remembered as an excellent homemaker, Mary enjoyed cooking and was a gifted seamstress. She was a member of St. Angela Merici Church, FDES and Our Lady of Fatima Society.

Mary is survived by her husband of fifty-six years, Ilidio “Lee”; her children, Isabelle Tavares (John) Przypek of San Jose and Tony (Olivia) Tavares of Sacramento; her siblings, Joseph Freitas of Vallejo and Antonia Bettencourt of Castro Valley and her grandchildren, Christopher, Julianne and Gabriella Tavares and Chancellor and Spencer Adams. She was preceded in death by her sister, Lilia Sousa.

Visitation will take place at The Paul Mortuary on Saturday, August 16 from 8:30 AM – 9:15 AM followed by Mass of Christian Burial at St. Angela Merici Church at 10:00 AM. Burial will be at El Carmelo Cemetery on Monday, August 18 at 10:00 AM.
