Maria Rosa Silva, formerly of Pacific Grove, CA, but residing in Castroville, CA, for the past several years in the home of her beloved Son and Caregiver, Oldemiro M. Silva, passed away at CHOMP, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Agualva, Terceira, the Azores, to Antonio Coelho da Fonseca and Hermina Aguiar da Fonseca. She was one of eight children.
Maria Rosa and her husband, Francisco P. Silva, had nine children. They immigrated to Massachusetts with six of their children in 1968, and then moved to Pacific Grove the following year, where they bought their home on Cypress Avenue.
Maria Rosa was a remarkable Wife, Mother and Grandmother. She was a woman of many talents, she was an accomplished Seamstress; she crocheted many beautiful colorful blankets for family and friends and was an amazing cook, making many delicious Portuguese dishes. She was famous for her soups, sweet bread, fish dishes and for making the best French fries with garlic chunks and linguica in wine, for her grandchildren.
Praying the Rosary every night with her family was a must. She knew so many amazing prayers and could name all the Saints. She loved her God above all things, and showed it in the way she lived. She was kind and patient and so loved her family. Her pretty blue eyes sparkled when she had a house full of family and friends. She so enjoyed babysitting and cooking for her two Grandchildren, Frankie and Kaitlynn, and always enjoyed having all of her Grandchildren and Great-Grandchildren around her.
One of her favorite pastimes was going for a ride with her beloved son Elmer. They would go for rides along the coast, stopping to eat, drink, walk and talk about her past and childhood stories. She and Elmer always said that their hearts were connected. She always knew how to comfort him when he was tired or stressed, and he always knew how to comfort her as well.
Maria Rosa was a proud member of Our Lady of Fatima Society, the F.D.E. S. of Monterey and other Portuguese organizations.
Maria Rosa is survived by her children, Fatima Rodrigues, Azores; Nalia Barcelos, Massachusetts; Rosa Pereira (Eduino) who helped Elmer so much over the past few years, San Jose, CA; Kenneth Silva, Azores; Oldemiro of Castroville, CA, and Joe Silva (Jolynn) of Monterey, CA. She is also survived by her Grandson, Rafael, who was a tremendous help and a constant in his Grandmother’s life, Daughter- in- Law, AnnaMarie, who she loved so much and always remembered her name in later years; Granddaughter, Teresa, who has helped her Grandmother so much till the end, as well as her two Great–Granddaughters, Gabriella and Isabella. Maria Rosa had 12 Grandchildren, 10 Great-Grandchildren and 2 Great-Great Grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Francisco P. Silva; Son, Felix de Silva; Daughter, Marta Silva and Son, Francisco P. Fonseca da Silva. May they all be reunited in Heaven.
