12/10/1933 – 10/19/2022
Joyce Ellen Myers passed away on October 19th at home in Pacific Grove, California, at the age of 88. Joyce was born in Leavenworth, Washington to her parents, Earl and Millie Graves. She graduated from Roy High School, Class of 1952 before moving to California’s central coast. Joyce was married shortly thereafter and had five children. She lived in Monterey County for 56 years before returning to the Pacific Northwest in 2008 where she stayed until moving back to Pacific Grove in 2022.
Joyce worked at Marguerite’s Hallmark shop in Pacific Grove where she realized her love for greeting cards, Christmas ornaments and giving thoughtful gifts. She later worked at L’Amandine in Carmel and The Hearth Shop in Monterey where she was a regular fixture for many years. Joyce never missed a birthday or special occasion for her children, grandchildren, or great-grandchildren. With the birth of her first grandchild in 1979, she started the tradition of giving individually themed Hallmark Christmas ornaments every year to each grandchild and great-grandchild.
She was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Monterey where she sang in the choir, tended to the children in the nursery, met lifelong friends and made many cherished memories. When she moved to Bend, Oregon in 2008, she found a welcoming congregation, made new friends at Discovery Park Lodge, developed an appreciation for tai chi, and was able to spend time with her great-grandchildren and family in the area.
Joyce was a loyal friend, dedicated mother and grandma, affectionately known as “Grandma Great,” and will be missed by all her loved ones. She was predeceased by her two older brothers and her son, John. She is survived by her four sisters, four children, nine grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Graveside and memorial services will be held at a later date.
