John A. Torchia, born in Columbus, Kansas, passed away at Community Hospital. A proud US Navy veteran, he was one of the last surviving Hospital Corpsman who served with the US Marine Corps at the Battle of Iwo Jima. John and his military experiences were profiled in The Herald this past Veterans Day.
John received his Master’s Degree from University of the Pacific. His career as a teacher at Amos Alonzo Stagg High School in Stockton spanned thirty-three years. After moving to the Monterey Peninsula over thirty years ago, John was a parishioner at St. Angela Merici Church and then at San Carlos Cathedral.
John is survived by his children, John Torchia, Jr. of Pebble Beach and Carol Hart of West Hollywood and his grandchildren, Sean and Sara Hart. He was preceded in death by his wife, Delia, in 2016.
