Guido Schreiber passed away peacefully on October 9, 2022. He was the son of Emil & Elly (Fritsche) Schreiber. Born in Lodz, Poland on September 18, 1925, his early years were spent close to his family’s textile plant. As a teenager, Guido escaped the Nazi regime in Poland and joined the Polish Regiment of the British Army in England where he repaired military radios. God Save the King.
After WW2, in 1951, he arrived in NYC aboard the Queen Elizabeth ship, which sparked his lifelong love of seeing the world via cruise ships (100+). He continued his business and textile studies. There was always some business deal. Being the entrepreneur that he was, he invented and got a patent for an electric radiant wall heater, set up container ship terminals in Elizabeth, NJ and elsewhere, set up aluminum smelters in Taiwan and Australia, inspected large hotel chains in Washington, DC and Beverly Hills, CA and had many other business ventures.
In 1967, he sponsored seven members of his family (who had escaped from Communist Czechoslovakia) to come to the US – his mother, sister and husband, two nephews and two nieces. In 1968, he married Marie Aleman (born in Ecuador). They built a home in Pebble Beach, CA in 1972, where he lived for 50 years. His wife predeceased him in 2013.
One niece lovingly describes him in one word “Storyteller.” Somehow the fish always got bigger, so to speak. He was very charismatic, had many friends and got along with everyone.
Covid had a large negative affect on his health at age 96. He survived, but never fully recovered.
He will be missed by his sister, Jane Brandel (NY), his nephews, Lanning and Richard Brandel (NY), his nieces, Jeannette Balins (NY), Christine Brandel (MA) and Alice Freyeisen (NC).
