Elizabeth Corrine Mackenzie, known as “Betty” to her friends, died peacefully on September 29, 2020 at the age of 97. It was said that Betty set a goal of living longer than any of her relatives, and she was successful in reaching that goal. Born in 1922 in the city of Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada, Betty was the youngest of four.
In 1962, she and her husband Bruce left Canada in search of a new place to settle. They both fell in love with the Monterey area and made it their home for the rest of their lives. Betty was predeceased by her late husband, Edward Bruce Mackenzie, on November 7, 2011.
Betty worked as a medical office receptionist until her retirement. She was a kind and gentle woman who loved animals, gardening, crafting, the color pink, and fairies. Betty was a talented artisan who treasured her elaborate collection of museum worthy dollhouses and miniatures. She was an avid collector and found joy in being surrounded by the objects of her affection, including her beloved dog Daisy.
Those who wish to honor Elizabeth Mackenzie and her compassionate love of animals may send memorial donations to Animal Friends Rescue Project, 615 Forest Avenue, Pacific Grove, CA 93950.
Thank you to those who lovingly cared for Betty during her final months, especially the caregivers at Carmel Hill Care Center and Heartland Hospice.
Betty will be laid to rest with her late husband Bruce at El Carmelo Cemetery in Pacific Grove. Plans for a burial service will be announced at a later date.
